"Everybody say YATTA!"

"G! R! DOUBLE E! N! LEAVES!
G! R! DOUBLE E! N! LEAVES!"

"Yatta!" is a 2001 song by the fictional Japanese boy band Happa-tai (Green Leaves), consisting of a group of various well-known Japanese comedians, originally broadcast in the Japanese comedy show Warau Inu no Bōken (Adventures of a Laughing Dog). It was a satirical song poking at the boy band craze as well as optimism in the wake of Japan's floundering economy, and the infamous music video had said band dancing clad in underpants with a fig leaf on it. While it was meant to be satirical, it still made the Japanese charts (No. 6) and went triple platinum, and the song and video had been used as a meme in Western circles in the Oughts.

It's so easy, happy-go-tropey:

  • Boy Band: A fictional example, with the one song to their name, especially since it was made for a comedy sketch show.
  • Garden Garment: While Happa-tai otherwise wore underpants, they sport a fig leaf.
  • "Pachelbel's Canon" Progression: Given its nature ribbing pop music, its song structure and chorus is based around the progression of Pachelbel's Canon.
  • The Pollyanna: Parodied. The subject material of the song, especially when you consider Japan's recession, and Japanese government being accused of trying to distract from the problems associated with it by telling the people to maintain a constant optimistic attitude rather than actually doing anything to address them. The song is all about mocking the latter. In the chorus, Happa-tai expresses how we are lucky to be alive.
    It's so easy!
    Happy-go-lucky!
    We are the world!
    We did it!
  • Spelling Song: The song is bookended by the band spelling out their English name as "G! R! DOUBLE E! N! LEAVES!"
  • Take That!: Towards boy bands and the Japanese government's campaign of optimism during the Japanese recession. In spite of that, it still became a hit in Japan and a meme in the West.
