The manga adaptation of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon by Takashi Shiina, the creator of Ghost Sweeper Mikami and Psychic Squad, and the sequel to Inuyasha. The manga tells a similar story as the anime, but with a few expansions as well as a few changes to the original story. The manga started roughly after the first season of the anime ended. This page will cover the events of the manga only.
The manga provides the examples of:
- Adapted Out: Ayame, Koga's Childhood Friend and eventual wife, does not appear in the manga. Justified as the manga follows the events of the original Inuyasha manga as Ayame is an anime-only character. Later subverted when she actually appears a few episodes later in a non-speaking role.
- Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Twice with the girls involved:
- In the manga, it's Moroha who wants to search for the Dream Butterfly rather than Towa. This is in part because unlike the anime, Moroha and Setsuna were adopted by Kaede rather than Koga's clan, and they grew close together.
- Unlike the anime, the Dream Butterfly does not let Setsuna feel joy/happy. She can only feel sorrow/sad and anger, but also does not lose her memories in the manga version.
- The sisters forgetting the other is switched, meaning it's Towa who forgotten about Setsuna while the latter still remembers her.
- Adaptational Angst Downgrade: The girls' mothers got to spend some time with them after their births, and in particular Rin got to hold and raise her daughters at all as opposed to not at all in the anime.
- As stated above, Moroha and Setsuan were raised together under Kaede and have more contact with Sango and Miroku's family as oppossed to being sent to Koga's clan and the Hanyo hideout in the anime.
- Adaptational Attractiveness: The Four Perils, specifically the men, gets this treatment. Konton is given a more handsome face, Totetsu is given a human form.
- Adaptational Badass:
- Jaken of all demons is given this treatment. Despite still being Sesshomaru's servant, he is given a Raindow Pearl which transforms him into an old human samurai.
- Jakotsumaru lasts longer than his anime counterpart where he is capable of fighting Koga.
- Adaptational Context Change: Plenty regarding the girls:
- In the anime, Towa meets Setsuna and Moroha when the two began fighting each other due to a misunderstanding, and encounter Mistress Three Eyes, the demon everyone was really after. In the manga, Moroha and Setsuna are adopted sisters looking for Towa.
- The anime established that the Dream Butterfly was used by Sesshomaru and Jaken on Setsuna, depriving her the ability to sleep in order to wake up Rin and save her from Zero's silver scales curse, and thus making it Towa's quest to find it and restore Setsuna's dreams and memories. In the manga, the Dream Butterfly removes Setsuna's ability to express joy, and it's Moroha's journey to find the Dream Butterfly. Also, Setsuna remembers Towa, but the latter does not.
- Adaptational Early Appearance: Rion is introduced much earlier in the manga, than she ever was in the anime, as instead of appearing in the second half of the story, she appears in the first third.
- Adaptational Expansion: The manga expands many character arcs, fights, and motives of other characters.
- Adaptational Dye-Job: Moroha's hair turns white when she turns into Beniyasha, making her a split-image of her father. The same happens to Setsuna when she goes full-demon.
- Adaptational Personality Change: Plenty for the main girls:
- Towa is far more boyish, lacks her anime counterpart's Guilt Complex, and a Blood Knight, with Sango emphasizing that she only lived in Kagome's time, she is still Sesshomaru's daughter. She also has no interest in finding the Dream Butterfly while her anime counterpart is the one who made it her personal goal to find it and recover Setsuna's memories.
- Unlike the anime, Setsuna's stoic front was due to being separated from her sister, and the only emotions she can express are anger and sadness. Plus she remembered Towa whereas the Dream Butterfly shenanigans in the anime made her forget about her older sister.
- Moroha is the one who wanted to find the Dream Butterfly due to being raised by Kaede along with Setsuna whereas they have no connection beyond being related as cousins.
- Eye Scream: Unlike the anime, Riku rips off his own eyes to avoid Kirinmaru tracking him, and he grows a new pair.
- The Great Off Screen War: In the manga, the east and western demons are at war with each other, prompting Sesshomaru to set up a barrier in the western domain.
- Love Revelation Epiphany: Sesshomaru has this after hearing Rin say that she has always seen him, since the day they met, as being beautiful. From there, she goes on to all but say that she is in love with him and that she wishes she could be with him forever, which causes Sesshomaru to realize that he has the same feelings for her as well.
- Plot-Relevant Age-Up: Rin is significantly older (and taller), making her look into her late teens/early adulthood.
- The Prophecy: The manga foretells a prophecy that the girls will reunite in ten years, then the girls will try to find their parents
- Sexy Discretion Shot: In chapter 15 between Sesshomaru and Rin, as he essentially says that by having children, they will make her life that is short, to him, last forever. The scene that follows is a blushing Rin being enveloped by Sesshomaru's fur and having her face being given a close-up as she moans his name.
