The Empty Ones by Robert Brockway is a Horror Comedy novel, the second installment in his Vicious Cycle series following The Unnoticeables.

In 1977, characters Carey and Randall go to London where they go to rescue Gus and fight more of the Unnoticeables, these mysterious angel-like creatures, and stumble on a powerful and unexpected ally. Meanwhile, in 2013, Kaitlyn, who was very nearly beat when last we saw her, continues her fight into the desert of Mexico and the Southwest US, seeking the mysterious gear cult. Once there, she discovers what the gear cult is really up to: trying to 'pin' the angels to Earth, focus their attention here, and get as much of humanity as possible "solved"—which, in their minds, is akin to being saved—and in the process discovers something incredible about herself.

This novel provides examples of:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Meryll may love Randall, but He seems to constantly call her the wrong name.
  • Action Girl: Kaitlyn, Jackie and Meryll fall into this category, although Meryll falls closer into the Dark Action Girl territory.
  • Amazon Chaser: Carey spends half of the book thinking of ways of trying to impress Meryll, even though Meryll thinks he's a creep.
  • Ancient Conspiracy: Tubs explains that the origins of Vampires and Angels stem from humanities encounters with the Angels and Empty Ones, who have only helped to propagate the mythology even further.
  • Body Horror: Meryll's Angel power does this anyone she touches.
  • A God Am I: Meryll definately sees herself as this.
  • Sequel Goes Foreign: Carey and Randall's hunt for Gus takes them to London while in 2013, Kaitlyn and gang are out in Mexico trying to face Marco.
