Star Wars: Escape From Valo is a middle grade novel set in the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia series. It was cowritten by Daniel José Older and Alyssa Wong and was released on January 30, 2024.

One year after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, Valo has been occupied by Nihil forces after it was enclosed within the Occlusion Zone by the Nihil's Stormwall. As the population struggle to survive under the despotic rule of Nihil commander Vark Tarpalin, resistance to his occupation is carried out by Padawan Ram Jomaram, who soon discovers three Jedi initiates - Gavi, Kildo, and Tep Tep - have also survived. With three young and traumatized Jedi now his responsibility, Ram balances his duties to them, his resistance against the Nihil, and the arrival of a young Zabrak pirate named Zyle Keem who offers their aid in exchange for a favor. Meanwhile, Valo native and Gavi's best friend Driggit Parse navigates the command structure of the Nihil in a bid to keep her homeworld safe, but the resistance's attacks make her efforts increasingly difficult as Nihil scientist Niv Drendow Apruk arrives on Valo.

Tropes in this book include:

  • Big Damn Heroes: After having gone missing since the destruction of Starlight Beacon, Ram's droid companion V-18, along with the Bonbraks, swoops in to save Ram and the "Scarlet Skulls" when they are being overwhelmed by a baby Nameless.
  • Blatant Lies: While fighting against Vark Tarpalin's occupation, Ram calls himself "the Scarlet Skull" over a comms channel. As Kunpar notes, the fact that Ram is saying that he's a Scarlet Skull immediately disproves his claim since the real Scarlet Skulls could not speak. When Ram and the three younglings meet Tanana Keem (who knew two actual former Scarlet Skulls) with their Skarlet Skull face paint on, she drops her hostility as soon as she hears them talk.
  • Body Horror: Niv Drendow Apruk reveals that the Nihil's attempts at breeding the Nameless in captivity have had mostly disastrous results, either dying before hatching or having to be put down due to severe birth defects. Grendrek - whom Niv Drendow effectively treats as a pet - is notable for being the first Nameless to have successfully hatched in captivity, to which Niv Drendow seeks copious amounts of mycopram to repeat this success and increase Nameless survival rates, but other characters notice the creature is still in bad shape. It turns out Grendrek is not all that flawless, as their flesh is slowly rotting off their bones. After Grendrek is eaten by a seevi worm, Zyle notes that even if they weren't eaten, they probably wouldn't have lived long.
  • Call-Back:
    • To The High Republic Adventures (2022):
      • Ram takes on the moniker of "The Scarlet Skull" - which he and Reath Silas had previously done in Midnight Horizon - while undermining Vark Tarpalin's rule of Valo. The Scarlet Skulls were a cult of child assassins that both Alak and Quiet Shan once belonged to. As Kunpar notes, the cult has been defunct for well over a century at this point.
      • Tanana and Zyle Keem are descended from Saya Keem, being her daughter and grandchild respectively. Meanwhile, Drrn is a friend of the family.
    • To the Republic Fair of Phase I (covered in The Rising Storm and Race to Crashpoint Tower):
      • In a mockery of the Republic Fair that was once held on Valo, Vark Tarpalin decides to hold a "Dark Fair" in celebration of the Nihil's victory.
      • Niv Drendow Apruk comes to Valo seeking out the Innovator, a research ship that was shot down during the Nihil attack on the Fair, and sank to the bottom of Lake Lonisa.
  • Call-Forward: Tep Tep and Kildo are both of the same species as Kho Phon Farrus, who was introduced in the second run of Doctor Aphra (which was written by Escape from Valo co-author Alyssa Wong). The introduction of these younglings also led to the species being named as the Alcedian with Valo being identified as their homeworld.
  • Darker and Edgier: While The High Republic middle-grade novels have not shied away from dark themes before, this one starts off comparatively bleak. Not only is Ram dealing with possibility of some of his friends being dead, he's also having to look after a trio of younglings who've experienced their own fair share of trauma as a result of the Nihil occupation. We also get flashbacks of one of them watching his master get husked to death by a Nameless (a sight previously reserved for the young-adult novels at the youngest age-rated).
  • Dramatic Irony: As part of his Scarlet Skull act, Ram pretends to be a Sith Lord to intimidate the Nihil. As far as Kunpar and some of the remaining Jedi on Valo believe, the Sith are long gone and the joke is on the Nihil. However, as the films show, the Sith are just in hiding at this point.
  • Escaped Animal Rampage: Downplayed. The animals from the wrecked zoo keep the Nihil out but are peaceful and protective toward the heroes hiding there due to Tep Tip being a Friend to All Living Things.
  • Refuge in Audacity: To fight against the Nihil subversively, Ram takes up the moniker of the Scarlet Skull. Said moniker belonged to a cult of child assassins known for cutting their own tongues out, and which was dissolved more than 150 years ago. After joining him, Gavi, Kildo and Tep Tep also take up the moniker. When they run into Tanana Keem (who knew two former members of the real Scarlet Skulls), she is astonished that a Jedi Padawan would even think of taking up that name.
  • Voice of the Resistance: In the first scene, Ram hijacks the loudspeakers the Nihil have set up through the city to denounce their occupation as illegal, and he also sends out radio signals off world to announce that there is a resistance on Valo.
