Twelve-year-old Serwa Boateng and her parents are members of the Abomofuo, a secret society that hunts shapeshifting vampires called adze. When an obayifo (witch) attacks her home in search of something called the Midnight Drum, Serwa's parents go on a quest to defeat her, leaving Serwa in the care of her aunt in Maryland, where she starts middle school for the first time. But just when she's getting used to a normal life, an adze infiltrates her school, and it's up to Serwa and her classmates to fight it.

The series, written by Roseanne A Brown, is a part of the Rick Riordan Presents imprint. The first book, Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting, was published in 2022, and a sequel is planned.

This work contains examples of:

  • Action Mom: Delilah Boateng is one of the most skilled slayers and is Serwa's primary trainer in combat.
  • Cain and Abel: Akosua/Delilah and Boahinmaa are sisters. They both used to work for their mother, the villainous Nana Bekoe, before Akosua defected to the Abomofuo. Boahinmaa has been her enemy ever since.
  • Classical Elements Ensemble: Asase Yaa gives Serwa's friends the powers of the four elements, turning them into a classical elements ensemble. Mateo got air powers, Gavin got water abilities, Roxy got earth powers, and Eunju got fire abilities.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: When the goddess Asase Yaa is reluctant to help the main characters, Roxy shouts at her for putting their lives in danger. Luckily, Asase Yaa doesn't retaliate, but Serwa still tells Roxy not to do it again.
  • Encyclopedia Exposita: Every chapter starts with a quote from the Nwoma, a handbook for the Abomofuo, often giving advice that contradicts whatever Serwa does in the chapter.
  • Exposition of Immortality: Serwa's mmoatia companion, Boulder, constantly mentions historical figures he's met in his lifetime, such as Napoleon and George Washington.
  • Face–Heel Turn: After learning that her parents lied to her about their past, Serwa leaves to join Boahinmaa.
  • Geometric Magic: Magic is harnessed by drawing symbols called adinkra.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Serwa's mother used to work for the witch Nana Bekoe, but later decided to join the Abomofuo.
  • Horror Hunger: When Serwa gets rid of her Power Limiter, her vampiric impulses drive her to attack a woman and come close to drinking her blood, before realizing what she's doing and running away in horror.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: The Abomofuo have the power to erase memories and use this to uphold The Masquerade. Near the end of the book, Serwa erases her friends' memories of magic.
  • Modernized God: The afterlife uses modern technology, and the nature goddess Asase Yaa is now a Granola Girl social media influencer.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Adze are very different from Western vampires. They most often take the form of fireflies and have the ability to possess their host's mind.
  • Power Limiter: Serwa's parents used a spell to suppress her vampire heritage. When she breaks the spell, she is quickly overwhelmed by her destructive new powers.
  • Puppeteer Parasite: The adze can possess the minds of human hosts, which makes them difficult to track down.
  • Red Herring: For a large portion of the book, the main characters believe Mrs. Dean is the adze. But it turns out that Ashley was the one possessed.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: The powerful obayifo Nana Bekoe is imprisoned in the Midnight Drum. Her daughter Boahinmaa is on a mission to release her.
  • Sibling Rivalry: The gods Tano and Bia can't stand each other and argue whenever they're in the same room.
  • To Hell and Back: Asase Yaa sends the main characters on a quest to retrieve her sword from the afterlife.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Serwa has spent her entire life hunting vampires, only to discover that she is half-vampire herself.
  • Vampire Hunter: The Abomofuo are an entire organization that hunts vampires.
