The 2003 UK cover

Saffron the Yellow Fairy (known as Sunny the Yellow Fairy in North America) is the third book in the Rainbow Magic franchise. It was released on May 29th, 2003.

Rachel and Kirsty befriend a sweet old woman named Mrs. Merry, who keeps bees. Inside one of her hives is Saffron, who has befriended the bees.

Tropes:

  • Bee Afraid: Zigzagged; initially, the Walkers and Tates are terrified of a bee and run away from it, but once Mrs. Merry comes along, the bees are much friendlier, possibly due to Saffron's influence. Then the bees become aggressive again when the goblins arrive and steal Saffron's wand.
  • Dub Name Change: Saffron is called Sunny in North American prints.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: The North American cover contains a small blurb on the bottom reading "Previously published as Saffron the Yellow Fairy". No other North American release of a Rainbow Magic book has this, not even fellow Rainbow Fairy Izzy/Inky.
  • Friend to All Living Things: While not as much as Fern, Saffron loves bees, and brushes their fuzz for them.
  • Pretty Butterflies: Saffron's main motif is butterflies, which are printed on her clothes and take the form of her fairy dust.
