OMG Shakespeare is a series of short William Shakespeare books that adapts the play's dialogue into early 2010s textspeak.
The books consist of text boxes featuring the dialogue, emoticons, and occasionally photographs. There's also a helpful glossary in the back describing what the emoticons and text speech means, for those who can't understand it.
OMG Shakespeare consists of YOLO Juliet, srsly Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream #nofilter, and Macbeth #killingit.
OMG Shakespeare provides examples of:
- Adapted Out: Romeo and Juliet removes several characters, such as Lady Montague (aside from a line mentioning she died), Abram, and Petruchio.
- Ambiguous Time Period: It's hard to tell if it's a true Setting Update or if the characters just use modern technology and slang.
- Celebrity Paradox: After falling for Juliet, Romeo turns on Renaissance FM and listens to Taylor Swift's "Love Story", which is a song comparing the singer and their crush to Romeo and Juliet.
- Demoted to Extra: Lady Montague is removed except for Montague mentioning her Death by Despair.
- Denser and Wackier: Even characters dying is treated lightheartedly due to the emoticons and casual language.
- Setting Update: Possibly. The characters at least have cellphones and Taylor Swift exists.
