Literature: Just One Day
A 2013 novel by Gayle Forman. When sheltered American good girl Allyson Healey first meets laid-back Dutch actor Willem at an underground performance of Twelfth Night in England, there’s an undeniable spark. So when fate brings them together a second time, Allyson takes an uncharacteristic leap, changes course, and follows Willem to Paris. After just one day together, that spark bursts into a flame, or so it seems to Allyson...until the following morning, when she wakes up after a whirlwind day in Paris to discover that Willem is gone. A life upended in one day turns into a year of self-discovery as Allyson embarks on a journey to break free from a lifetime of limits in order to find her true passions, and maybe even a true love.
  • The Casanova: Willem appears to be one.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Celine and Ana Lucia.
  • Chick Magnet: Whenever Willem goes girls just fall over heels with him. His friend Broodje says is like being in the entourage of a star.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Allyson just happens to meet Wren again in Holland.
  • Experimented in College: Allyson's friend Melanie starts dating a girl, although she prefers not to label it.
  • Gay Best Friend: Dee
  • Gay Paree: Where Allyson spends the day with Willem.
  • Greasy Spoon: Allyson works at one to save up for her trip to Paris.
  • Hipster: Melanie.
  • In Love with Love: If one is uncharitable, Allyson and Willem have this vibe.
  • Irony: When Willem goes to Cancun looking for Lulu and she is locked up in her hotel room by her mother to study. Also when Willem observes a couple of children called Joshua and Allison.
  • In the Blood: Acting for Willem. His great aunt Olga Szabo was an actress and unlike her brother Saba, Willem's grandpa, she did not survive the Holocaust.
  • Loads and Loads of Characters: There are a lot of characters, at least for a book.
  • Love at First Sight: The premise of the novel. Allyson falls in love with Willem almost immediately.
  • Love Triangle: Between Allyson, Willem and Celine and maybe a few other girls. Ana Lucia most prominetly
  • Matzo Fever: In the backstory, Dutch Bram fell for Jewish Yael pretty much at first sight and waited several years for her to get in touch with her. Their son Willem is also extremely attractive and sought out by pretty much every girl he meets. The girl he is in love with is also Jewish.
  • My Beloved Smother: Allyson's mom even calls her roommate Kali in order to get in touch with her.
  • The Nicknamer: Willem calls Allyson Lulu, after the silent movie actress Louise Brooks.
  • No Name Given: For most of the novel, Allyson only knows Willem's first name.
  • P.O.V. Sequel: The upcoming book Just One Year tells the story from Willem's point of view.
  • Red Herring: Various leads on Willem's whereabouts end up going nowhere.
  • Race for Your Love: At the end, Allyson finds out Willem's actual address. The book ends with her walking in his door.
  • Rich Idiot with No Day Job: Willem dons this disguise when he needs to get into a vacation club to look for Allyson.
  • Spanner in the Works: Willem almost got the number of Patricia Folley, the director of Teen Tour! who most certainly knew Allyson. But his Girl of the Week Ana Lucia caused a scene and he was forced to end the call.
  • Trailers Always Spoil: The summary spoils the fact that Willem leaves Allyson, despite the fact that this doesn't happen until Chapter 13. The e-book summary further spoils Willem's last name.
  • Traumatic Haircut: While in Europe, Melanie convinces Allyson to bob her hair, and she cries when they do it.
  • Uptight Loves Wild: Allyson is a "good girl", however Willem is somewhat of a free spirit.
  • You Need to Get Laid: When Willems returns from France after the hospitalization he is depressed that he lost Allyson and his friends think is because he has not gotten laid in a while. He takes their advice and starts dating Clingly Jealous Girl Ana Lucia.
