Fireman Sam and the Bonfire is a 1988 picture book starring the cast of Fireman Sam.

Sam has a huge pile of driftwood in his yard, so he decides to have a bonfire to use it all up. However, he's confused when the fire service arrives to stop him. Why?

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Sam has brown eyes in this book, instead of the blue eyes he has in the television series.
  • An Aesop: Bonfires can be risky, and it's best to check everything before you have one to ensure that you won't be endangering any nearby animals or neighbours. Also, only grown-ups should light bonfires.
  • Birthday Episode: The story takes place on Trevor Evans' birthday.
  • Nice Mice: An adorable mouse and her babies are hiding in the pile of driftwood in Sam's yard, whom Sarah and James befriend.
  • Skewed Priorities: Trevor's only concern about the bonfire in Sam's yard is that the smoke tarnished his good shirt, which he planned to wear to his birthday dinner at Bella's cafe.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Sam is completely unaware that the lumber pile he plans to burn is hosting a family of mice. Thus, when Sarah and James see smoke coming from his yard, they alert the fire service, who rush in to stop him before the mice can get hurt.
