Ho Yay / The Case Study of Vanitas

Go To

Given this is a story with vampires, just accept that there are a lot of implications already.

     Vanitas and Noé
  • The entirety of the story is basically Noé going through his memories of Vanitas to try and understand why he had to be the one to kill him in the end.
  • The anime opening can essentially be boiled down to: Vanitas and Noé go on a date. Noé even has a scene where he's happily spinning Vanitas around before letting go, leading the two to fall into a fountain.
    • The ending song even shows the two together with the lyrics being heavily romantic in tone. The end of the song shows Noé reaching out to Vanitas, with the last image being Vanitas teasingly holding Noé's chin.
  • Noé wonders what Vanitas's blood tastes like and even shyly asks the other if he could drink his blood. The way he says it makes him come across as a boy confessing to his crush.
  • Dominique's protectiveness of Noé has her threaten Vanitas with harm should he do anything to hurt Noé. Vanitas laughs and calls Dominique a "convenient female".
  • After he finds out Jeanne drank Vanitas' blood, Noé has this to say:
Noé: After I heard that Jeanne had drunk Vanitas' blood... Ever since then... My heart has been hurting. I was thinking... about why that was. And I've figured it out. I must... have been... chagrined that Jeanne beat me to it!
    • And a vampire bite is treated as Kiss of the Vampire there!
    • Dominique seems to even be jealous.
  • As Dominique offers Noé her blood, Vanitas is sitting right outside their carriage, looking contemplative.
  • As it seems like The Charlatan is about to kiss Noé Vanitas protects Noé.
  • Noé deciding despite Vanitas's attempts to push him away, he'll continue to stay by his side and it almost comes across as a love confession. Followed by a rising sun to bask the two in light as they stand on the roof.
Noé: So... even if you push me away... "I'll do as I please". "And no matter what" you want, I've decided to stay with you... Vanitas.
  • Chapter 12: Noé offers to teach Vanitas how to dance and he takes him up on it. While they're dancing, they discuss what love is. When Vanitas declares, "I have... absolutely no interest in the kind of person who would fall for me", Noé seems slightly confused and he may have purposefully stepped on Vanitas's foot.
Noé: (in his inner monologue) I would not truly understand...the meaning of the stirring in my heart... until quite some time later.
  • Dante jokingly refers to Noé as Vanitas' danna, which has multiple connotations from "sugar daddy" to husband.
  • During their big fight where Vanitas is brainwashed by Mikhail to either kill his friends or tell him why he killed their "father". It turns into an entire scene of Noé going through a "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight and it ends with Vanitas on top of Noé , and crying into his shoulder.

     Noé and Louis
  • Whenever he and Louis were around each other, Noé always seems to have a blush on his face.
  • One of his flashbacks with Louis has the two sitting together with Louis asking if Noé had drunk any blood. Noé flushes as he says he'll be fine if he doesn't drink any, Louis slashes his fingers and holds it out for Noé to drink. Noé seems flustered as Louis assures him he won't see anything else if he drinks his blood, leading Noé to grab Louis's hand to drink.
    • When Domi asks Noé if he wants to drink her blood, Noé thinks of Louis when he offered his blood to him. He tells Dominique he wants to drink form her.
  • Noé seemed incredibly attached to Louis, and his death had affected him greatly.
  • Despite Dominique claiming that Noé is her fiancee (even though it's a joke), Noé shows no interest in her besides being a Childhood Friend and Louis remains the person who made a large impact on him.
  • When Noé first meets Louis and Dominique, he seems to be blushing at Louis as he approaches him to shake his hand.
  • When Noé sees Louis carving he notices how odd he was acting and grabs his hands, asking if there was something he could do to help with a flush on his face.
  • Louis being purposefully cruel towards Noé almost seemed like he was trying to protect Noé.
    • The Charlatan seems to appear for Louis and tells him they've been waiting for him, "to want something very badly". Given he ends up running after Noé and protect him from a crazed Mina says a lot.
  • It's Noé that manages to snap Louis out of his blood craze for a moment. Louis then pleads for Noé to be the one to kill him, since he would be killed by the bureau. Noé refuses the request and lets Louis bite him, recalling all of his happy memories with Louis.
  • Noé's greatest regret with Louis was the fact he wasn't able to kill him, as it was Louis's desire and last wish.

Others

  • Dominique may love Noé, but she likes to flirt with women:
    • In her first appearance, she hits on Nox, the Count's female assistant. Dipping her no less, causing the poor made to flush in embarassment.
    • In Chapter 12, she drags Jeanne into a close dance.
    • An extra chapter reveals that Jeanne has become quite fond of Dominique in turn, which Dominique finds adorable.
  • Jean-Jacques Chastel's first scene is him leaning over Noé with Noé immediately freaking out and assuming the other had drunk his blood without permission.
