When he and Hector discuss her, one of the things Mateo comments on is that he always felt broken because he never had romantic feelings for anyone and while Hector appears to be going for a "you just needed to find the right person" argument, he finishes by insisting that even if Mateo had gone his whole life without finding "the right person", there still would have been nothing wrong with that or Mateo himself.
    • Matteo says that he needs to make Wanda a pair of shoes and then she'll really be part of the family. Hector has a So Proud of You reaction to this.
  • Mateo shares about how despite his own stupidity during the war, he had people to help him in his darkest moments. Whether that was Wanda who set him straight after he found out about Ernesto's death, Martin who was his truest friend during the war, or Ernesto, whose watch saved his life. As Dante observed, Mateo actually came back from the war more emotionally healthy by comparison.
