For as difficult and painful as the lives of these characters can be there are plenty of moments that will put a smile on your face.
- Suzuki going souvenir shopping for his kids. For as distant as he can be from them there's just something heartwarming about him taking time out of his day to send them presents.
- Six year old Mob wanting to show her dad her school uniform. She's so proud to be a first grader and she just wants to show her dad her grown up school uniform and backpack.
- Sho's first crush on another boy is just plain adorable. He's too little to know what he's feeling or what to do with it so he does some daredevil stunts to impress his crush. Masami handles it beautifully. She assures him that he's having some big kid feelings, there's nothing wrong with them, and that he can have those for boys or girls and she will always love him.
- Sho's sixth birthday party has Suzuki stealing one of Sho's drawings, a drawing of a multi tiered cake, and then ordering that cake for him...and also apologizing that the cake isn't stacked up like Sho had wanted it to be.
- Seven year old Mob's first Valentine's Day sees her trying to give chocolate to the first boy she ever has a crush on. She doesn't go through with it but seeing her try is just warm in the heart.
- Mob trying to have a conversation with the boy she has a crush on is heartwarming due to the mutual attraction between the two of them. Well as much as there can be between two first graders.
- Mob's first White Day has her getting not only her first White Day chocolates but also her first kiss. It's only on the cheek but it's enough to get her to float right off the ground and stop the rain around her.
- Suzuki really does love Masami even though he can't really express it well. He wants to have her and hold her but he just can't get the words out.
- Suzuki taking Sho and Mob to see the big Christmas tree in Times Square when they're young. It's always heartwarming when he puts aside his own emotional problems and just acts like a dad.
- Mob making a thousand paper cranes so that Minegishi wil forgive her. She's only nine years old and she thinks that if she folds all of these she'll get her wish and her best friend will forgive her. It works, but not because of the cranes.
- Sho is such a good big brother to Mukai be it feeding her, teaching her to draw, playing fetch with her, trying to get her to eat gross baby mush with no ranch, pushing her in her stroller, or saying goodbye.
- For as cold and as distant as Suzuki is he really does value the people he considers to be his friends.
- Shimazaki taking care of Mob on their coke fueled Tokyo odyssey and freaking out when she vanishes on him in the middle of the night and he finds her in the morning.
- For as angry as Shimazaki makes them Minegishi can't be cruel to him for long and when they need to apologize they go all out like labeling the entire kitchen with braille labels so Shimazaki can make his way around.
- Sho finding baby snakes, trying to raise them in his closet, and then having to let them go.
- Shimazaki, for all of his problems, is very caring and loving towards Mukai.
