Heartwarming / Masters of the Air

Go To

Part Two

  • When Biddick's plane takes a hit and can't fly fast enough to keep up with the formation, the entire Hundredth slows down for him, prolonging their time in enemy territory to protect their friends.
  • Crosby, upon hearing they need him to plot a new course at the new slower speed, rises to the occasion and plots a series of course and altitude changes that will throw off German pursuit and let them escape through cloud cover to break for Scotland. He later shyly endures the praise he receives from Major Egan and Colonel Harding for his work in getting the Group out of danger.
    • Crosby's wife Jean writes him every week, and includes a P.S. reminding Crosby to tell Bubbles she said "Hi." Bubbles is delighted by this. He notes that Crosby is delighted by the fact that his wife signs off as "Mrs. Jean Crosby."
  • Biddick calls from a house in Scotland to thank Buck and Bucky for saving his crew, and you can see his crew in the background being treated to dinner in the next room.

Part Four

  • When everyone at Thorpes-Abbot is waiting to see if Dye's crew made it back intact from their final mission, Bucky notices his ex Lilly (now Dye's beau) worrying, and makes a point to assure her that Dye will be alright. Soon after, he is proven right as Dye's Fort comes blazing in over the flightline victoriously, buzzing the tower before landing.

Part Six

  • When Crosby breaks down and confesses that he blames himself for the deaths of his friends in the Munster raid, Westgate consoles him, reminding him that his friends are dead because of Adolf Hitler trying to conquer Europe, not because of anything Crosby did trying to help stop him.
  • Rosie explains why he's in such a hurry to get back to his unit and back into the fight, knowing that people are suffering under Nazi occupation the longer the war lasts.
Doctor Huston: This war… [sighs] Human beings weren’t meant to behave this way. ...You disagree?
Rosie: No. But you see people being persecuted, subjugated, you have to do something, right? They can’t fight for themselves, can they? So, what do we do?
Doctor Huston: No, you’re right. We had to do something, and... here we are.
  • Rosie's men tell the story about when they were flying over Germany during the Munster mission in Royal Flush and heard Rosie begin humming an Artie Shaw tune over the intercom, they knew that no matter how bad things got, they weren't alone.
  • After a hellish ordeal of hiding in the German countryside, being captured and nearly lynched, and interrogated, Bucky ends up at Stalag Luft III and hears a familiar voice:
Buck Cleven: John Egan! Your two-o'clock! What took you so long?
    • The whole scene of Bucky and the others entering the POW camp is this even with the circumstances of what's happening. As he and the others enter, they're greeted by several of their comrades who have already been imprisoned and both sides take comfort in knowing that guys they thought dead survived both the jump from their planes and being trapped behind the lines.

Part Eight

  • When several Tuskeegee Airmen are brought to Stalug-III, they are met by jeers from many of the white prisoners. But they are also met by friendly welcomes from airmen who had seen the Red Tails fighting to protect their bombers and were happy to see them.

Part Nine

  • Once the Soviets realize Rosie is an American, they are nothing but helpful allies to him and do everything they can to treat his wounds and get him back to England as soon as possible.
  • The men are ecstatic to see Rosie back alive after he was shot down over Berlin, the men running or riding bikes along the road as he rides back on base in a jeep.
  • Buck makes it back to friendly lines, and is flown back to the base in one of the group's bombers. As he is welcomed back, he notices bombers doing practice bombing runs, dropping loads of boxes on the field from low altitude. It turns out that the Bloody Hundredth's newest mission is to fly over the Netherlands, still under German occupation, to drop food to the Dutch civilians, who are suffering from a famine. Amazingly enough, the Germans have agreed to this, and have promised not to shoot at the Allied bombers.
  • Buck is invited to fly one of the Chow Hound missions, and readily agrees.
Buck: Let's go feed some people.
  • Lemmons goes up for his first flight ever, with the crew of the bomber happy to see his look of awe-struck wonder as the bomber climbs through the clouds.
    Buck: How's the view, Kenny?
    Buck: It's something, ain't it?
  • As the bombers approach the drop zone, the German Anti-Air gunners honor the truce, watching the bombers fly low over their position without taking a shot at them, and the aircrews see crowds of Dutch civilians eagerly awaiting the food drops and waving at the American planes. After the food is dropped, the camera lingers on a young girl grabbing a fresh orange that we saw Crosby packing for the mission. As the planes depart, they see a message spelled out in the flowers:
  • When they approach their base, Buck gets on the radio and asks for landing instructions. The voice giving their instructions sounds very familiar.
Buck: Clearup Tower, please repeat. Over.
Bucky: Oh, you heard me the first goddamn time, Gale.
  • The German surrender is announced as we see Airmen, Red Cross girls, and English civilians listening with rapt attention to the radios. The base erupts in celebration, with the mechanics using the flare guns, up until now to signal between the planes and the airfield, as ad hoc fireworks.
  • Crosby is nervous about returning home after the war, worried that he won't turn out to be a good father. Rosie assures him he'll be a great dad.
  • The "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue:
    • We find out Rosie meets his future wife after the war, on his way to serve as a prosecutor at the Nuremburg Trials.
    • Crosby indeed turns out to be a great dad. It's noted that he and his wife served on the PTA at every school their kids attended.
    • Bucky finally meets a girl to settle down with after he returns home, a former high school classmate who served with the WASPs.
    • Buck marries Marge after the war. Bucky was his Best Man.
