Legacies proves from the first episode that it's going for a more optimistic and lighthearted approach to the Vampire Diaries franchise.

General

The series taking place at the Salvatore School, an Extranormal Institute where young supernatruals can learn and grow into functioning members of society. After so many deaths in the previous two series, Legacies is about giving the next generation a sancturay and home.
Lizzie and Josie fully love Caroline, who sadly is always absent abroad, and consider her their mother and its clear that while she not around Caroline loves the girls.
The series begins with Hope and the Saltzman twins at odds with each other, especially Lizzie who constantly complains on how perfect she is and the relationship the girl has with their father. Over the course of the show, especially in the second half of season one, they slowly become friends; despite ups-and-downs the three end up developing a sisterly bond.

While Lizzie explores different realities where Hope wasn't present, there's always the underlying subject of just how much Klaus loved Hope and what she meant to him.
- For example, in one of them Klaus opens up a much improved version of the Salvatore Academy after she was born so that Hope will not have to be alone while learning to master her powers. *In another where she is either dead or just never born, Klaus goes mad and starts a war against humanity.

The Reveal that Josie had a crush on Hope for years. When Hope learns this, its clear she's extremely flattered especially in light of how her twin treats Hope.

In the flashback, Kaleb (a vampire) asks Raf (a werewolf) to look after MG while the former is on the road trip with the others to Mapple Hollows. He does so out of concern as MG's family never invites him home for the holiday.
- Just to make sure he does it, Kaleb points out its the least Raf can do after sleeping with Lizzie who MG has/had a massive thing for. Raf looks ashamed when he learns everybody apparently knows that and agrees.
Despite believing that he killed Landon, Hope still gives the werewolf-bitten MG her blood to cure him. Plus the fact that Alaric doesn't even question whether or not she would do it.
After spending the whole season being on him for not "being a real vampire", Kaleb tells him they are family and apologizes for not truly understanding what the vampire was going through.
MG: Everyone's going to hate me.
Kaleb: [sincerly] Then they'll have to go through me.

With Alaric in a coma, Lizzie goes on a quest through his memories to try and find his spirit. The memory she finds him in is the one she never expected: the day the twins were born.

Despite being rivals in the past, Jed is able to confide in Finch about his newfound feelings for Ben, reassured when she, as a Mentor in Queerness, tells him he can talk to her about it for as long as he wants, and Finch in turn feels less adrift from the Super Squad following Josie's departure.
