For most of the book, Denizen's relationship with Grey is extremely heartwarming. At Crosscaper, Denizen's only friend was Simon, a relationship that probably took years to develop. Denizen still doesn't like making friends... but he considers Grey his friend after knowing him for only a month. And for his part, Grey thinks of Denizen like a little brother.
This becomes sweeter when you consider that they're both orphans.

Grey’s kindness towards Mercy. She’s the daughter of the Endless King, and a Tenebrous, one of the monsters he’s been fighting against for thirteen years, but still he treated her like a person, doing everything in his power to help her.
Jack’s conversation with Denizen. His strength of character is so evident in this scene; he's working on accepting what happened with D’Aubigny, and is able to openly talk about the events of the previous book without breaking down. And Denizen finally voices his guilt about what happened to someone other than Mercy, to which Jack gives a wonderful response.
Jack: You didn't bring doom down on our heads. We were already facing the darkness. It's just… sometimes it wins.
