    Season One
  • Jack is so completely protective of his granddaughters, who are apparently his only family left after his daughter Marion's death in the pilot.
  • Lou moves to Heartland on a permanent basis after her mom's death in order to help run the ranch, even though she has a very lucrative job and boyfriend in New York and is deathly afraid of horses.
  • When Amy is knocked unconscious by a scared horse, her father Tim immediately jumps into action to help her, even if this ultimately ends with him falling in the river himself.
  • Ty spends an entire afternoon creating a jumping ring for Amy's show-horse, Spartan, who is too afraid to be trailered, even though he has other duties at the ranch.
  • Jack brings Ty along on the cattle-herding expedition in episode 9 and ends by giving him his second-best cowboy hat.
  • Lou and Amy treat Mallory just like she's their younger sister, even though she's just the neighbor's daughter.
  • When Mallory gets scared that Lou is thinking of selling Mallory's primary horse, Copper, Lou offers to let Mallory "own" 50% of the horse in exchange for working at the ranch (which Mallory already does for free).
  • Jack and Lisa's fishing date is quite adorable, especially when Jack helps Lisa.
  • Despite all their differences, Val and Jack do consider each other dear friends, and Val is genuinely hurt that Jack never told her about his relationship with Lisa.
  • Lou goes to Scott's vet-school reunion as his date, and Ty and Amy also go together to her high school's semi-formal that same night. Even though in the first episode Jack was against Ty spending time alone with the girls, Jack says nothing against Ty taking Amy to the dance and even tells Amy how grown-up she looks and lets Ty borrow his truck.
  • While recovering from a concussion, Jack has multiple flashbacks to when he himself was a child, when his own grandfather owned Heartland; Jack had previously promised to always keep Heartland in the family and resolves to keep his promise, no matter what.
  • The fire is revealed to have been presumably caused by a heater that had been left on overnight. Mallory admits to having used the heater the night before, but had turned it off before leaving. Jack promises he does not blame her and gives her a big hug. It is eventually revealed to have been started deliberately, by an unrelated arsonist.
  • When Jack is hospitalized with a subdural hematoma, Tim rushes to the hospital to support his daughters and offers to pay for Heartland's necessary barn repairs (the barn was partially destroyed in a fire the previous episode).
  • When the girls and Jack get home from the hospital, they find the entire community (minus the Stantons) has come together to help repair the barn themselves.
  • Even though Amy and Ashley do not get along well and are each other's steepest competition in the upcoming Fall Finale, Amy still looks at Apollo for Ashley (even though both Ty and Mallory tell her not to).
  • Tim gives Amy Marion's old school ring on a chain to wear for luck during the Fall Finale and tells her that Marion would be proud of her.
  • Scared because his former owner is in the competition center, Spartan refuses to enter the grounds for the last round of competition until Amy asks him to do it for her mother, Marion.
  • Lou is able to make Mr. Mallen (Spartan's abusive old owner) let Amy keep Spartan by writing up a very large bill for having taken care of Spartan for so long and giving him her lawyer's phone number. He doesn't take the bait, and so Spartan is allowed to stay at Heartland.
  • For the first time since Tim left Marion and the girls, Jack allows Tim into the house at Amy's congratulation party for winning the Fall Finale.
  • Jack catches Amy and Ty kissing in the barn during the party and tells Ty that he is welcome to stay at Heartland even now that his probation is over. Even after Ty says that he is leaving Heartland, Jack tells him that he can always come back and call Heartland his home.
  • Thinking that Lou is about to leave Heartland, Scott finally confesses his feelings for her, saying that he will follow her wherever she goes.
    Season Two
  • In general, Jack's basically adopted both Ty and Mallory as extra grandchildren.
  • Ghost Horse
    • Also on the "Awesome Moments" subpage, Lou and Tim co-sign a loan to create a "corporate equine retreat" at Heartland, and Tim writes out a check to allow Lou to begin working immediately, even if the rest of the family isn't so immediately supportive, although Jack eventually agrees to let them do it.
    • Jack allows Mallory to spend the summer at Heartland, as long as her parents agree that it's all right (although she had actually told them that he had let her stay the night before he did).
    • The moment Jack realizes Ty is in trouble, he leaves Amy's birthday party and goes to get him, showing that he truly cares about Ty. He then brings Ty back to Heartland with him, even though he is not sure how Amy is going to react, showing that he doesn't hold ill will towards Ty for hurting his granddaughter.
    • Even though Ashley and Amy are still not close, Ashley still gets invited to Amy's surprise birthday party, and it's clear that Ashley is making an effort to be nicer, since it is thanks to Amy that she got to keep her horse.
    • Tim gets his daughter Amy a horse named Storm for her birthday, even though Storm actually arrives the day after her birthday. He also brings Lou the architect plans for the equine retreat, although no one is as excited about that as they are about the horse.
    • When the new mustang rushes at Amy and manages to knock her over, Ty runs into the pen, trying to prevent Amy from getting seriously hurt.
    • Ty frees the mustang without Amy's permission or knowledge, after realizing how lonely he is in his pen and knowing that other mustangs are in the area (he can hear another horse whinnying in the distance and calling to the mustang). This manages to put another wall up in between him and Amy, as Amy thinks the mustang is safe to be around.
  • Letting Go
    • Even though Mallory begged both her parents and Jack to let her stay at Heartland over the summer, the poor thing is obviously homesick.
    • Once he realizes how upset Mallory is, Jack goes in and talks to her about how she's a part of both the Heartland group and her own family, and he even gives her permission to redecorate her room to her own liking, so long as she talks to her parents, who have been calling her every day.
  • Gift Horse
    • Amy does eventually give up Storm, but she has to sell him, to a fellow show-jumper, Nick. Amy tries to give the money from the sale to her father, who refuses it, and then to Lou for the retreat, which she uses to buy the horses for the trail rides.
  • Dancing in the Dark
    • While on the cattle drive, Amy and Ty kiss, as do Jack and Lisa. Mallory winds up dancing with a boy around her age that's been padding after her all season (Jake), and even Tim gets a new love interest, his old boss' daughter Callie!
    • One of the horses that Lou bought for the trail rides, Betty, is revealed to be blind and is only calm when she is near her best friend Slick, who is essentially a "guide horse".
  • Corporate Cowgirls
    • Lou's friends from New York come to her equine retreat (which is in Canada) specifically to see her, even paying full price to do so when she offered them a discount.
    • Ty and Caleb are able to put their differences aside in order to save Spartan's life from pesticide poisoning.
    • Even after the disastrous overnight trail ride, all three of Lou's New York friends apologize to her and promise to tell everyone back in New York about Lou's retreat. They also share a group hug before returning home.
  • Holding Fast
    • When Jack confronts Lisa for having ignored him for several days, she reveals that she's gotten him a new suit.
    • Jack shows up to the polo match in the new suit Lisa got him, even though he initially refused and did not want to.
  • Sweetheart of the Rodeo
    • Ty helps Amy practice for her driver's license, and then helps her practice her cattle-roping for the rodeo, although Tim is upset that his daughter didn't ask him for help first.
    • Mrs. Bell and Sugarfoot are eventually revealed to have been reunited by the time of season 2, and Sugarfoot winds up befriending Venture and helping with Venture's recovery from his hydrophobia.
    • Jack gets Amy a roping horse named Cowboy and tells off Caleb for not being willing to partner with Amy, although that does make Caleb reconsider partnering with her.
    • Jack, Caleb, and Tim all congratulate Ty on his first bull-ride, although he does not last very long, even as they tell him off for almost getting injured.
    • When Lou is unhappy about her placement in the Rodeo Queen competition, Soraya tells Lou she is her role model.
    • Although Amy and Ashley are still not very good friends, Amy willingly listens to Ashley's troubles (she's upset because her mother sold Apollo) and drives Ashley home because she (Ashley) is too drunk to drive. Knowing that Amy is still a very new driver, Ty follows the girls in his pickup truck and is there to comfort Amy after they get into an accident. Ashley is also allowed to stay at Heartland for the night as well.
    • Because Amy is not yet a licensed driver, Ty takes responsibility for Amy's accident in Ashley's car the next day.
    • Jack gives Ty one of his rodeo belt buckles for competing in his first rodeo competition (and also reveals that he knows Ty lied about the accident to protect Amy).
  • Summer's End
    • Ashley shows how much she truly cares for Apollo when she breaks down again after her mother selling him.
    • Ty's father talks Ty into naming one of the slaughterhouse horses after Ty's mother, Lily.
    • After Ty's father leaves again, Ty shares a sweet moment with Kit, who says that she doesn't scare easily.
    • Caleb finds Ashley's car broken down on the side of the road and brings her back to Heartland on his horse, Cowboy. He also talks Jack into letting her stay at Heartland until she can make up with her mother.
  • Showdown!
    • Mallory is so happy to see her parents again, now that they've returned at the end of the summer.
    • Jack is able to talk Mallory into agreeing to at least try out her new boarding school (although she really doesn't want to), and Amy agrees to take good care of Copper for her.
    • Before leaving for boarding school, Mallory kisses Ty on the lips, and Ty tells her it's okay (although he obviously doesn't return her feelings).
    • When Amy is getting worked up over Caleb and Ty possibly working for her father (which would make it more difficult for them to work at Heartland), Caleb gives her a "Shut Up" Kiss in order to calm her down.
  • True Enough
    • Even when Kit buys him a new cowboy hat, Ty is still very attached to the one that Jack gave him and refuses to let her throw it away.
    • We learn a bit of Grandma Lindy's backstory in this episode: Lindy was a professional singer, and Hank Adams was her original lead guitarist. We also find out that Jack knows how to play guitar, and he plays along to a recording of Lindy's, which both Amy and Jack then sing to.
    • Lou and Amy have a heart-to-heart about their father's new relationship.
    • Miss Adams finally agrees to let her father come and visit Boxer, and Heartland agrees to keep Boxer long-term.
  • Starstruck!
    • Ashley truly seems to be friends with both Amy and Soraya now.
    • Although a rather spoiled brat, Mindy gifts her (one-of-a-kind) designer belt to Amy (who then gives it to Soraya), talks to Ty about Amy, and puts in a good word about Heartland to her PR agency.
  • Divorce Horse
    • Lou's friend Mackenzie comes to have her wedding at Heartland.
    • Mackenzie and Ian are really sweet and cute together, with Mackenzie even having recovered from all her "allergies" since meeting him.
    • After a bad fight, Ian rides in as a literal knight in shining armor, and Mackenzie agrees to get back together with him in time for the wedding, with Lou as her maid of honor and Jack giving her away.
    • While helping set up for Mackenzie's wedding, Lisa winds up getting Lou's email to a "friend of a friend's son" named Peter, with whom she winds up setting up a date by the end of the episode.
    • After realizing Diva will never be a show horse, Lisa gives Diva to Mackenzie as a wedding present.
  • Do or Die
    • Peter keeps sending flowers to Lou, even though she is trying to stay away from him.
    • Mallory and Tara strike up a genuine friendship, and Badger comes to look up to Ty.
    • After finding out her mother is being tested for cancer, Ashley genuinely makes up with Val and drives her to the appointment.
  • Dark Horse
    • Mrs. Bell almost gets sent to an assisted living facility because of her unconventional ownership of Sugarfoot, but Lou puts on a charitable derby to raise money for a legal defense fund for her.
    • Jack briefly stops racing in order to check on Tim, who's fallen off his horse.
    • Scott winds up winning the derby, with Tim and Jack tying for second.
    • Jack reveals that he was previously quite proud of Tim, thinking of him like a son, until Tim broke up with Jack's daughter, Marion.
  • The Ties That Bond
    • Ty spends the money he had been saving up for a motorcycle in order to buy a new horse named Harley for Amy.
  • Full Circle
    • Peter rents out the entire Dude Ranch in order to spend more time with Lou.
    • Peter and Lou go on a carriage ride together, and he reveals that he has an ex-wife with whom he shares a St. Bernard, Max.
    • Victor calls Marion a courageous woman and says that her spirit lives on in her younger daughter, Amy, who shares Marion's gift with horses.
    • By the end of Amy's time in the mountains, thanks to Victor, Amy and Spartan are back in sync and are able to jump properly again.
  • Step by Step
    • Even though he does not initially approve, Jack stays behind to watch Mallory and Jake and lets Ty and Amy take his truck up into the mountains to look after the wild mustangs. He even lets them stay overnight at his old fishing cabin.
    • Peter calls his plows to clear the roads between Heartland and the fishing cabin, which allows Ty and Amy to get home safely and ingratiates Jack to Peter quite handily. He even demands to be allowed to go with Jack to rescue Amy and Ty.
    • During Ty's illness, he again confesses his feelings towards Amy, calling her beautiful, and Amy confesses that she has always loved Ty, resulting in a kiss.
    • Ghost is back with not just his mate, but a foal that looks like a perfect combination of both of them.
    • Jack lets Ty move permanently onto the couch and talks to him about treating Amy properly now they are back together.
    • Jack gives Tim a large check so that he won't have to sell any land to Val, though it's more of a business loan.
    Season Three
  • Miracle
    • When Ty thinks Amy's schoolbus has been in a serious accident, he is the first one to jump into action, getting into his truck. Even before Jack or Lou, both of whom are biologically related to Amy (although Jack is a close second, jumping into Ty's truck).
    • Even though Amy's teacher has given strict instructions to stay on the bus, Amy jumps off when she sees a horse that's gotten stuck in a barbed-wire fence and is able to calm him down quickly, getting him to lie down long enough for Stewart to cut him free.
    • Amy and Ty have a picnic date in the fields.
    • For an odd value of "heartwarming," Caleb punches Ty for daring to hurt Kit.
    • When Ashley refuses to let Caleb back into his trailer, Jack lets Caleb move into the loft with Ty.
    • Jack reassures Lisa that he misses her when she is not around, although he also says the time when she's gone goes by rather fast (they both own their own businesses, so they cannot spend every spare moment together).
    • It is revealed that Jack has been the one going to all of Val's appointments with her, and she considers him a true friend.
    • Jack says that he has not been on a plane in thirty years, since he says there's nowhere he'd rather be than there at Heartland, especially when Lisa is right there beside him. He also reassures her that they are not too old to be "fooling around" like Mallory says they are.
  • Little Secrets
    • Taylor seems to truly care for Trooper and even sings their special song to him while brushing him. It is this song that gets Kate to stay at Heartland for a bit longer to get help for him.
    • Amy lets Trooper stay at Heartland while Taylor gets psychological help.
  • Man's Best Friend
    • Lou lends Amy a dress for her school formal, although she ultimately wears a different dress (see below).
    • Amy helps Jake's cowpony, Kramer, for free because Kramer is helping Amy with a grieving horse, Duke. The reason Duke and Kramer get along so well? Duke's old best friend looked just like Kramer!
    • Ty is worried about going to the school formal with Amy because he doesn't know how to dance, and Lou offers to teach him. She also reassures him that Amy would never be embarrassed to go with him to the dance (he is a little bit older than the other students, but also has his GED). Peter later also helps with the dance lessons.
    • Lisa buys Amy a gorgeous dress in Paris to wear to the school formal.
    • Even though Jack's truck has been having mechanical trouble for a long time, he refuses to give it up because his first wife, Lyndy, had bought it for him back in the 1970s. When he's eventually all but forced to buy a new one, he goes out to his old fishing cabin and winds up falling asleep while listening to Lyndy's music, and he winds up dreaming of the day Lyndy bought him his truck.
    • The reason Kramer's been jumping over fences? He's a naturalborn jumper! Amy also offers jumping lessons on Kramer to Mallory, who's been wanting to learn to jump for years now.
    • Jack is able to get back his old truck from the scrap yard and return the new truck he does not like, in exchange for one that is much more physically similar to his old truck, with Lisa's blessing.
    • When Ty's truck breaks down on the side of the road on the way to the dance, Ty asks Amy to dance in the bed of his truck instead, showing off his newly learned dancing skills. He also gives her a promise ring.
  • The Haunting of Hanley Hill
    • Lou offers up Heartland's kitchen to Mrs. Bell for canning, and even though she is annoyed by Mrs. Bell's incessant stories about Sugarfoot, she does not insist Mrs. Bell stop.
    • Mallory covers for Badger to his social worker, Clint, and then packs up snacks for him.
    • Mrs. Bell gave her first boyfriend a can of jam, and he returned the jam's jar to her with a butterfly. Even though this relationship was likely 50+ years ago, she still remembers the interaction fondly. She also leaves a jam jar with a butterfly in it at his gravestone at Hanley Barn every year.
    • Lou gives Mallory some good advice about how to handle her feelings for Badger, even though Mallory insists that this is "for a friend who's definitely real and is super pretty".
    • Even though Mallory is convinced that Hanley Barn is haunted, she is willing to spend the night there to help Badger.
    • While Jack does allow Amy (and Ty) go to Hanley Barn by themselves, he stays up all night worrying about them, and while he treats Lou more strictly than he does Amy, he drives her to the airport in order to go visit Peter in Denver.
    • Ty offers to let Badger stay at Heartland for a few days if he ever needs to get away from the group home, and even gives him some advice about how to deal with Clint, as they both had worked with him as their social worker.
    • Mallory finds a picture of herself in Badger's sketchbook, and the two nearly kiss before Clint arrives to drive Badger back to his group home. He later doubles back to actually kiss her under the pretense of having left behind a colored pencil.
  • Glory Days:
    • Caleb tells Soraya that he's thinking of quitting bullriding out of fear of getting a permanent brain injury, but it's clear that he really just wants to stay with Ashley in Calgary.
    • Even though Caleb pays Val back for his loan, she tries to tell him to keep it for "future rent money," although he ultimately tells her that he can't accept the money back in order to get things right with Ashley again.
    • Even though Amy is slightly jealous of Kit and Ty spending time together taking care of Daisy, she immediately goes to help Daisy bond with Merlin and apologizes to Kit for Daisy's stillbirth the night before, and Kit accepts Amy's advice on how to get Daisy to accept Merlin.
    • After Kit rubs the dead foal's blanket over Merlin to get him to smell like the original foal, Daisy comes to seemingly accept Merlin as her own foal, allowing him to nurse from her.
    • Ashley and Val finally fully reconcile in this episode, with Ashley ultimately moving back in with her mother (and out of Caleb's trailer) and Val coming to accept Caleb as a decent young man.
  • Growing Pains:
    • Lou is able to convince Peter to meet with a big environmentally-friendly oil exec, Richard Chenoweth, before revealing that Chenoweth is staying at the Dude Ranch and will be around for dinner the next night.
    • Mallory has come to have a special bond with Heartland's chickens, naming them Charlotte, Anne, and Emily and able to recognize them each individually.
    • Ty and Amy are basically like parents of newborns, and Ty refuses to leave Merlin alone, saying that Merlin starts "crying" when he's alone.
    • Mallory helps Jack patch up the hole in the henhouse so that none of the other hens can get out at night.
    • When Lou feels guilty for ruining Peter's chances with Chenoweth, Peter insists that she has nothing to be sorry for and calls Chenoweth an ass.
    • When Mallory finds out about the cougar attack, she willingly offers to muck out the stalls and take care of Merlin while Amy and Ty go on a trail ride.
    • During their trail ride, Ty reveals why he's been so overprotective of Merlin: He wants to be the opposite of his parents when it comes to being a parent, and give his child unconditional love and support.
    • After all the trouble the cougar caused all episode, the local wildlife warden is able to safely tranquilize the cougar (who is revealed to be female) and bring her to a local wildlife reserve. She's ultimately revealed to be a mother, with Jack finding her cub after the mother is taken to the reserve and taking him to Heartland so that Scott can bring him back to his mother.
    • When they find out about Merlin and the cougar cub, Caleb, Ashley, and Soraya all come over to help, and Amy hugs all three. They even take over Amy and Ty's nighttime shifts, allowing them to get some much-needed sleep.
    • When Scott comes to pick up the baby cougar (whom Jack has named Tuffy) and Merlin, he also drops off a box of baby chicks to replace Charlotte.
    Season Four
  • What Dreams May Become: Near the end of the episode, Scott admits to Ty that he should have listened about what was going on with the polo team and should have put the horses' health first.
  • Graduation: Badger's negligence in keeping the water trough full on a hot day results in Spartan getting colic. He immediately feels much remorse, realizing that it's his fault if Spartan doesn't make it through the night. By morning all is well and Amy is able to make it to her graduation ceremony. Badger apologizes to Amy and promises he will do as he's told, and Amy forgives him.
     Season Five
Candles in the Wind
  • The Reveal that Ty has decided to propose to Amy and asks Jack for his blessing, showing a profound respect for the man and role he plays in Amy's life. The look on his face when he gets it right before Jack leaves for France speaks volumes to what this means for him.
  • Jack misses Lisa while she's in France and everyone encourages him to go there and see her which Jack declines as there's so much work he has to do on the ranch. However, seeing the efforts Peter is putting into his and Lous's anniversary and Ty's plans inspire him to do so after all; before does, he makes sure to give the young man his blessing.
     Season Six
General
  • A new character is introduced: Georgie Crawley, an eleven year-old runaway who has had a rough childhood and has abandoned her latest foster home when she is caught hiding out at Heartland. Despite the rough start, she quickly bonds with the Fleming family and taken in-first as a temporary stay under Jack before being formally adopted by Lou and Peter as their daughter. At the same time, a difficult horse named Phoenix (Rising) is found and brought to the ranch where he and Georgie become attached similar to how Amy and Spartan bonded in the beginning of the series.
