Heartwarming / Eleutherophobia

Go To

The Day the Earth Stood Still

  • Jake and Tom have the reunion they never got in canon. This scene demonstrates SoloMoon's whole motivation for writing Eleutherophobia: she wanted someone to give Jake a hug and tell him everything would be okay, and realised Tom was the only person Jake would be open about his feelings with.
  • When he realises Jake is having a nightmare, Tom acquires him to calm him down.
  • Their family dog, Homer, survived the war, and is very happy to see his family again. This moment helps Tom feel hope again for the first time.

Lost World

  • In-between all the victim-blaming news and tasteless sitcoms, one of the programmes Tom channel-surfs through shows Steve Irwin enthusiastically talking about Hork-Bajir.

War Games

  • It's mentioned that Jake has fewer nightmares when Homer sleeps on top of him.

THX 1139

  • Tom is able to have a conversation with the ex-host boy, even while his mother complains about him being unresponsive. It's nothing deep, but Tom assures him that nobody made the Yeerks up and gets him to smile when he morphs Jake. Later, he teaches the O'Shea patents that Jodi isn't a vegetable; she just needs engagement. He really is an older brother.

Back to the Future

  • Tom reassures Jordan that Rachel didn't die for nothing, and it's okay to feel unhappy.
  • After spending all day being misunderstood by overbearing relatives, Tom reconciles with his dad.
Steve: I missed you, you irreverent little brat. Even when I didn’t know why I was missing anything.

Ghost in the Shell

  • Tom reunites with his high school basketball teammates. When one of them asks Tom if he no longer thinks he's too good to hang out with them anymore, another one stands up for him.
Kit: Boy was getting brain-fucked by space slugs. Show a little respect!

A Straight Line Down Through the Heart

  • Cassie observes how much the Berensons understand each other. Jean and Steve are respectful of their sons' issues, being careful to not invade Jake's personal space and looking at Tom when he talks so they don't misunderstand his mumbling.
  • At the end, Cassie thinks about how she and Jake have a love language of their own as they fly off into the night as owls.

Escape from L.A.

  • Tom wishes he could tell past Jake to never give up, just like Jake did to him years ago.
  • Once past-Marco is certain that Eva is uninfested, he hugs her.

How I Live Now

  • Tom remembers holding a baby Rachel when he was a toddler; his mother said it was practice for being a big brother.
  • After explaining how the Yeerks kept morph-capable hosts contained, Eva hugs Tom to calm him down.
  • While the Animorphs bombard Rachel with information about what she missed while she was presumed dead, Tom gives her advice for coping with being an ex-host.
  • At the end, Eva reminds Tom that the Yeerks are Not So Invincible After All and death isn't the only way out, should they ever return.
There’s no such thing as a world without hope. No such thing as a perfect cage. Even if the worst happens, and we’re taken again. Even then, there’s still hope.

Other

  • This Tumblr short reveals that Eva didn't care for Tom at first, but still felt sorry that her close friend Jean "lost" her son. However, two years later, Eva realises that running Matter Over Mind with Tom has made her attached to him. Also, Marco still remembers how Eva likes her coffee after all their years apart.
  • Sol has several Tumblr posts chronicling A-Town, a cheesy Show Within a Show in the Eleutherophobia-verse loosely based on the Animorphs' lives during the war. In one post, she mentions that actress who plays Tom's Captain Ersatz is a lesbian, so Marco sets her up on a ton of fake dates with boys to hide this from the homophobic press.
