Jesse finally getting the love and attention he deserves

  • Callie praises Matt's flyers, asking why he doesn't join the tech team in set design. He's pleased but demurs, saying the flyers aren't that great. She believes otherwise.
  • When discussing Moonlight over Mississippi, Callie pitches that they should have a cannon for a battle scene. Their teacher warns them that it will be hard to build since Callie has only painted sets. Loren, their stage manager, says he doesn't see the harm in Callie trying it out.
  • Despite the bad blood Matt and Greg have, with Matt being obnoxious towards Callie, Matt glares at him for being condescending about Callie's costume hat from the vault, Blowing a Raspberry.
  • Callie tries to perform an Operation: Jealousy by showing off Jesse and Justin at the baseball field, where Greg is practicing. Justin saves her lame excuse by saying Callie is showing them a great place to get bubble tea. He then advises Callie that if you're making someone jealous, to not let them get to you.
  • It's revealed Jesse is helping Justin practice for his audition. Justin in turn says that Jesse should also perform, but the latter says he's not good enough. Callie and Justin believe otherwise.
  • Justin comes out of the closet to Callie while they're eating lunch. She's surprised but supportive, giving him a hug. When Liz asks why Callie was hugging a guy she doesn't know well, Callie says she can't tell her.
  • Liz and Callie's friendship is beautiful. The former asks Callie to accompany her down to the costume vault to get the material needed for sewing the costumes. They watch Gone with the Wind despite Callie warning her that they'll have little brother interruptions. Callie also gifts her with a cute pincushion to hold needles. In the end, when Callie accidentally ditches Liz at the dance, she hugs the other girl's feet and begs forgiveness the next day. Liz admits she wasn't mad, just wanting to make her friend squirm a little.
  • Callie tries to encourage Jesse to audition for the play. When he refuses, she goes onstage and sings horribly, purely to make him laugh. He and the audience find it amusing when she's done.
  • Justin is bummed about getting a comic relief role rather than the lead. While Callie and Jesse fail to cheer him up, he bounces back for rehearsals thanks to his crush on Loren the stage manager.
  • Callie and her brother talk about going to see Les Miserables. The show inspired her to try and perform, only she found out that she couldn't sing. Callie then tried out for tech crew in sixth grade, and became enamored. She lets him watch her build a model set and explain what she's doing.
  • After some encouragement from Liz, Callie texts Jesse out for a date at the bookstore. He has a better idea...ask his dad to drive them and his twin to a giant theatre specialty bookstore in town. Callie is bummed when realizing Jesse missed the point but cheers up considerably when he shows her around. She can only afford a bookmark and tells the boys she'll have a long presents list for the holidays and graduation.
  • Callie's little brother calls out to her and says hi while she's doing a scene change on opening night. She and Jesse find it Actually Pretty Funny and adorable.
  • West trips on night two, falling. Immediately the tech crew fusses over him and gets him ice. Bonnie tries to go It's All About Me but the tech crew calls her out while asking if West can do the rest of the show.
  • Callie at first doesn't think much of West breaking up with Bonnie, merely witnessing their fight while getting a mop. Then Bonnie runs off after Act One, to cry in the Janitor's closet. While Liz is coaxing Bonnie to come out and get changed, Callie's look is utter sympathy, as seeing Bonnie heartbroken gives her no joy.
  • The tech crew is both sympathetic towards Bonnie and pragmatic: they feel bad for her, but the show must go on, so they'll do anything to get her onstage. They even try to have West talk to her before Loren announces he can't miss his cue.
  • Everyone's response to Jesse subbing in for Bonnie in Act Two on the play's last night. At first, the tech crew is in Stunned Silence, before Matt configures the mikes accordingly. West gets over his surprise and recites his lines. Callie gives a Smile of Approval, as does Justin backstage.
  • Jesse gets a roaring standing ovation at the curtain call. He looks like he's about to cry Tears of Joy. Soon after, the crowd mobs him for autographs. Justin tells Callie he'll catch up.
  • Liz cheers up Callie, hugging her when Callie starts crying on thinking Jesse ditched her at the dance. They redo their makeup and Liz messes up Callie's hair playfully so that look wilder. The two proceed to have fun until Justin tells Callie that he found Jesse.
  • Near the end of the book, Callie and Jesse making amends after the latter's little stunt the night before. Jesse admits that he didn't mean to make Callie his Last Het Romance, and that he wanted to make it work. Ditching her at the dance was rude.
  • Matt apologizes to Callie for his rudeness that year. It turns out he told Greg that he had a crush on Callie, and Greg kissed her to spite Matt. Matt, however, acknowledges that Callie didn't know and taking it out on her was unfair. Callie forgives him on realizing that Greg was using her to further Sibling Rivalry, telling him that Greg and Bonnie both deserve each other for causing drama.
  • The tech crew celebrates their successful year with bubble tea, at Callie's suggestion. Loren then nominates her to be stage manager next year because of her Determinator qualities and spirit. Everyone's approval is unanimous. Callie gives a big grin and says she can't wait to show off her ideas.
