- Juan may be an amoral outlaw but he often shows he loves his family. He's seen as often kissing his sons as striking them.
- John giving Juan warm, sympathetic looks after seeing him mourning his dead sons. It's in vain, but he also tries to cheer Juan up from his depression with a promise of wealth.
- And later Juan returns the favor, comforting John before his death.
- John refusing to judge Villega for the betrayal the latter had been forced to commit under torture
