Headscratchers / Handbook for Mortals

  • So, does Zade mind control the entire tech crew into not noticing she's doing their jobs for them, or something? In both of Zade's acts, almost everything is done by actual magic—during the illusion she does with Charles, the only thing the crew seems to have to take care of is Zade's harness and maybe the mics. That means there are dozens of people watching things which would ordinarily be the result of a ton of work on their part just...happen. Do none of them have any questions about this? (This also raises the question of: if Zade is so invested in keeping her powers secret, why is she throwing them around like that, instead of doing illusions the normal way and using magic for little extra flourishes?)
    • Bad writing aside, the text itself mentions that Zade is incredibly reckless with her powers, has special favor with Spellman who can ensure no one questions Zade's recklessness without serious consequences, and she was willing to use highly dangerous, unpredictable "chaos magic" for cheap parlor tricks that could be replicated with practical effects if she tried at best or could cut off a couple of steps from an already unwieldy and overly-long production at worst. As said by KrimsonRogue of The Book Was Better, "Zade is an idiot."
  • A little pedantic, but when Zade explains how to pronounce her name, wouldn't the better comparison have been "it's like Jade but with a Z"?
