  • So...how'd Leopold Reynolds die? Which of the two murderers killed him? It wasn't made particularly clear in the story.
    • It's stated that Leopold was found drowned by the river. Given that Mrs. Drake went to see Hercule Poirot that day to inform him, it seems reasonable that she was not the one to kill Leopold, but rather her accomplice, Mr. Garfield. She had time to douse herself with water to cover her involvement in Joyce's drowning. She would have had no explanation for being soaked after a second drowning that occurred outdoors and on a clear day.
  • For that matter, was Mr. Drake's death yet another murder? That seems to be the implication, but is never satisfactorily dealt with.
    • I believe we were meant to infer that it was. We're told that Mr. Drake died prior to the death of his Aunt. His Aunt cut Mrs. Drake out of the will after finding out that there had been an affair involving Mrs. Drake (though it's unclear if she knew her gardner, Mr. Garfield, was the one with whom she'd had the affair. It seems she'd have fired him immediately, had she known, if she was willing to cut her relatives out of a will entirely.) Mr. Drake was killed by a speeding stolen car. Since he would have been the one in control of the money once the Aunt died, and the murders were either to obtain money or to cover up the earlier crime, it would seem likely that Mr. Drake served as an impediment to receiving that money.
