YMMV / Hallowe'en Party

Go To

The novel Hallowe'en Party contains the following YMMV tropes:

  • Angst? What Angst?: The fact that the murder victim is a child of thirteen is not particularly remarked upon. That her little brother also dies doesn't particularly make anyone sadder.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: There is much discussion in the book about the leniency of the legal system, the prevalence of adolescent victims and/or culprits, and a declining education system. 1960s England, or 2020s America?
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Michael Garfield crosses it by grooming and then attempting to sacrifice his own daughter Miranda, just to remove an obstacle to his plans for a new garden.
    • Rowena Drake crossed it by killing a child and may have killed a second.
  • The Woobie:
    • Poor little Miranda Butler. She's the only one who seems saddened about Joyce's death and blames herself, as she was the witness to the murder Joyce claimed to have seen. Then it gets better; she's being groomed as a human sacrifice by a man who happens to be her biological father.
    • Mrs. Reynolds, who over the course of the story loses her daughter Joyce and her son, Leopold.
    • Olga Seminoff, who saw her family back in Herzegovina be disappeared by a police state, and years later is given hope that she will become rich from inheriting Mrs. Llewellyn-Smythe's fortune, only to be accused of forgery, threatened with jail for a crime she did not commit, then murdered and thrown down a well. And all the while your memory is besmirched as everyone assumes she ran away to avoid jail.
