Funny / The Two Popes

Go To

  • The opening of the movie has Pope Francis calling a travel agency for a flight reservation, to which the operator laughs off as a prank call when he introduces himself. This ends up as the very same conversation at the ending minutes of the film, to which he approaches one of the Swiss Guards outside his room for assistance in the Wi-Fi connection.
  • When Francis and Benedict first meet in the bathroom, Francis is whistling a little tune. Benedict asks what Hymm he's whistling, to which Francis replies it's "Dancing Queen" by ABBA.
  • Bergoglio's nonplussed reaction on being served exactly the same dinner that Benedict is having, even though they're not eating together: a plate of clear soup with a single enormous dumpling in it. The nun who serves it to him seems to be equally amused.
  • When Benedict comes to visit Bergoglio in his guest room, Bergoglio, who is well aware that Benedict doesn't think much of him, is on his best behaviour. Then when Benedict invites him to help himself to some wine, he practically runs out of the room to get some.
    • While chatting in front of the TV, Bergoglio relates to Benedict a joke about Jesuits.
Bergoglio: Two seminarians go up to their spiritual director, and one of them asks, "Father, is it permitted to smoke while praying?" And the director goes "No, of course not!"
Bergoglio: Yeah, yeah. And then the second one, he was a Jesuit. And he says "Brother, you're just asking the wrong question." And he goes up to the spiritual director and asks, "Father, is it permitted to pray...while smoking?"
Benedict: ...yeah. Pray and smoke at the same ti - [cracks up laughing]
  • As the end credits roll, we are treated to scenes of Benedict XVI and Francis watching the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final at the Papal Summer Residence, relaxing on the couch like good friends over some pizza and a couple mugs of beer. And all with a rendition of Besame Mucho playing in the background.
    • The fact that the Final is between their respective nations makes things even better. Francis is greatly invested in the match and brings his own scarf; even Benedict, having said during his papacy that he doesn't quite get the hubbub about the sport, starts to warm to it.
    • Benedict gets his first taste of the intensity of football when an Argentine player fouls a German, and he denounces the Argentine side as violent, to which Francis replies dismissively that "it's all part of the game". Later on, a German wounds an Argentine.
      Francis: Eh?
