When Gandalf bids good morning to Kathryn, she uses his famous line to Bilbo about what he means by that.note "Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I wish it to be or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?" Amused by that, Gandalf decides to remember it.

When Smaug declines Andraya's request for him to impregnate Freyja and the witch starts protesting, he reminds her that in exchange for her help in finding Kathryn, he agreed to "help Andraya with a small task"… and he just did that by carrying the heavy sack that was giving her trouble. The smug witch is left completely bewildered before she starts raging again.
When Smaug finally shows himself to Kathryn, she completely surprises him by slapping him. Twice.
When Smaug states in the 14th chapter that men, elves and dwarves like to hear themselves talk, Kathryn playfully points out how hypocritical it is of "Smaug the Golden, Smaug the Wondrous, Smaug the Magnificent, Smaug the O-so-pompous one" to say so.
