Funny / The Babadook

Go To

  • A thoroughly grogged-out Samuel telling child care services that his mother gave him drugs. It was valium, but that still doesn't lessen the humour of the scene.
Social Worker: Hello, Samuel. How are you today?
Samuel: I'm a bit tired from the drugs mummy gave me.
  • Samuel's reaction to the initial reading of Mister Babadook is pretty funny. The book gets progressively darker, and finally full-on Nightmare Fuel, and Samuel reacts as you'd expect. The film then bluntly cuts to Samuel screaming and crying his head off, burrowing into his mother as she tries to read him a blatantly light-hearted book about happy mermaids under the sea.
  • After the first day of the film, in which many things go wrong for Amelia because of her job, relatives, and of course Samuel, she tries to find some... alone time by using her vibrator. When Samuel comes barging in afraid of the Babadook in the midst of her climax, she's understandably frustrated.
Amelia: Oh, no! No, no, no...! This is not going to happen...
  • Samuel's admission to social services: "My cousin's not coming because I broke her nose in two places."
  • While Amelia is possessed by the Babadook, Samuel wets his pants. His possessed mother angrily scolds him for that.
  • There's something darkly funny about Samuel stabbing his mother in the leg, yelling "Sorry, mum!" and sounding genuinely apologetic before running away.
    • And then Amelia chases him to the basement, hits Samuel's tripwire and faceplants hard into the wall. This movie just turned into a brutal sequel to Home Alone.
  • The scene where Amelia asks Samuel "Why can't you just be normal?!".
  • The ending to the original short is straight up played for comedy. The Mother (the prototype for Amelia) pours a glass of milk and lays it outside the basement door, which the proto-Babadook sheepishly takes.
