Funny / It (1990)

Go To

For a miniseries often touted as one of the scariest, if not the scariest ever made -It somehow manages to pack in a lot of really funny moments.

  • At one point, Ben embraces (who he thinks is) Beverly and tries to pull in for a kiss. But only for him to see "Beverly" wearing big, poofy clown pants. Then he realizes he was smooching Pennywise, who mocks him for it.
"Kiss me, fat boy!" (Evil Laugh)
  • "Excuse me, sir!! Do you have Prince Albert in a can?? You do?? Well, you better let the poor guy out!!" The incredibly lame joke isn't what's funny, but Tim Curry's ridiculously hammy laugh.
    • And this goes on as Richie attempts to talk to the librarian about seeing Mike, while Pennywise, not giving one damn whatsoever, just fucks around on the upper floor drowning out Richie as much as he can with the goofiest smile on his face, before culminating in him yelling in an outrageously hammy tone: "GET OUT!" It's just impossible not to bust up laughing from the whole scene, and it's easily one of the best in the film.
    • Even better is right before Pennywise's joke, Richie's head just drops in a This Is Gonna Suck expression.
    • And piggybacking on this is the fact that the librarian can't hear Pennywise at all, and is thus completely confused as to why Ritchie is shouting at her to talk to her.
    • Also this:
Pennywise: You're too old to stop me! You're ALL! TOO! OLD!
    • Richie's massive Oh, Crap! reaction once hearing Pennywise's voice 30 years later... as the clown says this.
  • The scene in the movie where Bev first meets the losers club after 30 years and makes out with each one (including the married Bill) is funny. Though those who didn't read or heard of the novel wouldn't get why but those who have would. Though it wasn't mentioned in the movie it is heavily implied that she had sex with all the members of the losers club. It's confirmed in the novel.
    • Although Eddie all but confirms he's still a virgin, making it more likely the orgy wasn't off-screen but Adapted Out entirely.
  • Richie being his best stand-up comedian self in the library, just before everyone learns of Stan's suicide.
Richie: It's great to be back in Derry, breathing in that old Derry-air!
  • Stan's disembodied head in the freezer sounds like it'd be scary, but then the head starts talking and making jokes. "How's YOUR sex life? ... WHAT'S your sex life?"
  • The TV movie's DVD commentary features several of the stars, and they joke around quite a bit, offering some great Nightmare Retardant to what's happening onscreen.
  • When Pennywise kidnaps Audra, he initially appears as a gas station attendant who asks her if she wants a balloon, only to reveal himself as the Monster Clown and show her the deadlights. During this phase, he repeatedly asks his victim "Don'tcha want it?", and gets increasingly frantic, as if a customer of Ronald McDonald rejected his Big Mac.
  • Tim Curry revealed at a 2017 Fan Convention that between takes, Georgie's actor complained "Tim, you're scaring me!" His response? "Gee, I'm so sorry, but that's what I'm supposed to be doing."
Host: You think this child has been in therapy for years?
    Curry: I hope so.
