Funny / He Who Fights With Monsters

Go To

  • Jason manages to rescue the adventurers from the cultists with a great deal of luck, despite being concussed at the time. Gary thinks it's a case of Obfuscating Stupidity, and is very impressed.
  • Jason is rather depressed when he realizes everyone else is unspeakably pretty. He looks down at himself, covered in rags soaked in mud, sweat, and quite a bit of blood, and sighs.
  • The High Priest of the Blood Cult prepares to kill the team. Jason is caught up on the fact that his name is Darryl Carruthers. He notes that Lady Cressida Vane has a much better "evil high priest" name, and deduces that the cult just didn't want a woman in charge. While Darryl and Cressida are bickering, Jason manages to shove them both off the cliff.
  • Clive's first interaction with Jason: Jason apologizes for sleeping with Clive's wife, and leaves before he can respond. Clive isn't married.
    Clive: What just happened?
  • Did you know that Rufus's family runs a school? Jason ends up turning Rufus talking about his family's school into a drinking game. Later it turns out that this was learned from his grandfather Roland who does the same thing, except among diamond rankers.
  • Jason finds a magical tattoo parlor. He happily explains that he got a good deal since the owner has a thing for chunky elves but they needed to find a sailor suit for Neil quickly.
    • Later, when he asks the owner of the tattoo parlor about payment she asks if the chunky elf in a sailor suit is on the table.
  • Jason manages to convince his entire team that Neil is fat. It isn't until they see him with his shirt off that they realize that it is the unflattering cut of his clothing (designed by his great-aunt) that makes him look fat rather than muscular. Neil is furious when Jason explains how he wouldn't make fun of someone who was actually overweight.
  • Jason has a somewhat melodramatic scene where he ponders the need for strength after yet another near-death experience. And then this line:
He stood up, his face full of steely resolve. Then he got dizzy and sat down again, before getting up more slowly.
  • Jason sends his friends a recorded message. Rufus acknowledges that the message is genuine when he notices that Jason was stuck in hostile territory with no pants. The recorded message manages to interrupt Clive's stream of questions with perfect timing. Doubles as a Brick Joke since we see him record the message quite a few chapters prior during a break between fighting.
    • Dawn manages to have a complete conversation with Jason via recorded message. He is quite annoyed by the fact that she finds him so predictable.
  • Stash the mirage dragon spends a lot of time disguising himself as Jason in a variety of schemes to steal biscuits (because Jason gives Stash biscuits, and Stash can mimic special abilities, so he thinks if he mimics Jason he can make biscuits). In his early attempts, he can't mimic clothes.
    • Jason winds up having conjured clothes dissipate just as Humphrey walks in and is mistaken for Stash.
    • Stash tricks Rick Gellar into obtaining a wheelbarrow full of giant biscuits. Rick doesn't realize the trick until he starts to explain to Humphrey that Jason told him that Humphrey wanted... Oh, Crap!
