• In Ender's Shadow, after Bean outplays Achilles:
  He had miscalculated grossly. He had forgotten that when Bean said for Poke to kill him, he had not just been showing respect for Achilles. He had also been trying to get Achilles killed.
• In Shadow Puppets, Hot Soup's correspondence with his superiors regarding Virlomi's stone stacking in India, in which he uses a thick layer of sarcasm, pretending to realize the plan that the higher-ups had already formulated while actually condescendingly instructing them as to how to get out of the PR mess they'd created.
• In Shadow of the Giant, Fly Molo snarks at Bean long after most of the world has learned to take Bean very, very seriously:
  Bean: I'm here because I have a child in Manila. A boy. They tell me his name is Ramon.
  Fly Molo: And yet this is your first time here? Who was the mother, a flight attendant?
  Bean: The baby was stolen from me, Fly. As an embryo. In vitro fertilization. The child is mine and Petra's. It's especially important to us, because it's the first we know of that definitely does not have my condition.
  Fly Molo: You mean it isn't ugly?
• In Shadow of the Giant, as Alai prepares to assert his control over the Muslim world, he and his aide have a discussion about his first target:
  Alai: By the way, Ivan, can you tell me why Rajam's nickname is "Andariyy"?
  Ivan: Would it help if I told you he chose the nickanme "thick rope" for himself?
  Alai: Ah. So it doesn't refer to his tenacity or strength.
  Ivan: He would say it does. Or at least the tenacity of a particular part of his body.
  Alai: Yet... rope is limp.
  Ivan: Thick rope isn't.
  Alai: Thick rope is as limp as any other, unless it is very short.
  Ivan: I shall be sure to repeat this joke at Rajam's funeral.
