Funny / Criminologist Himura and Mystery Writer Arisugawa

Go To

  • When Tokie and Arisugawa are discussing the latter's novels:
Tokie: That one was nice. Sakura...
    Arisugawa: The Ophelia of Sakuragawa!
Tokie: Yes, yes! Arisu-sensei, your books have a great title. That one was good, too. The Golden Mansion.
Arisugawa: That wasn't my work, but okay!
    Tokie: Ah, whoops...
  • Himura learns that Arisugawa is looking after his neighbour's canary, and decides to have some fun at his expense.
Himura: Deducing from this canary, your neighbour is around 27-28 years old, and 163cm tall. Her weight is around 45kg. She is probably a teacher.
Arisugawa: Oi oi oi, that scares me. How do you know all that from looking at this canary?
Himura: I took the elevator with her the other day.
  • In "An Odd-looking Customer", when Himura is called to the scene of the crime:
Nabeshima: I apologize for calling you all the way here.
[Himura walks past him and points at Arisugawa]
    Himura: You are the perpetrator.
    Arisugawa: Stop saying stupid things!
  • Himura's inappropriate and wholly insensitive attitude when called to work on a hostage situation.
Himura: [while the hostage's wife takes a phone call] I'm bored. Can I go home?
Arisugawa: [through gritted teeth] Don't be a kid.
  • Arisugawa and Tokie giggling madly to themselves as they make a confused and stubborn Himura work out a puzzle in his home.
  • Himura playing matchmaker for a very flustered Arisugawa, setting him up with a solo questioning with the woman and then miming to them from the background.
  • Arisugawa going off on a non-sequitur while at the crime scene, with Nabeshima getting involved too:
Himura: So, what did you eat today?
    Suspect: Beef bowl from Ushi-taro.
Arisugawa: Ushi-taro! So good right? You get change back from using one coin! And the taste! Cost performance is so high!
Nabeshima: Um... I go there often too.
    Arisugawa: You do?!
Nabeshima: The pork bowl is delicious, right?
Komachi: Let's talk about the case instead of relaxing!
  • When Tokie is worried after Himura receives a strange phone call:
Arisugawa: Don't worry, I'll protect him.
Tokie: You're not that reliable, but please do.
  • While Komachi sombrely asks Akemi to accompany her to a crime scene, Sakashita is behind her and awkwardly trying to avoid eye contact with Akemi's friends, who he'd met previously on a group date.
  • In "A Study in Vermilion", Himura seeks out Yasoda for a special favour related to the investigation. Before that, Yasoda procures a picture that Himura looks over intensely. Just as the viewer's been tricked into thinking it's a serious piece of evidence, the music cuts out and Yasoda reveals with a goofy grin that it's a picture of his kid.
  • The whole sequence in "A Study in Vermilion" that starts with Sakashita interrupting Himura's catchphrase and devolves into everyone messing around:
    Himura: This crime is-
Sakashita: I get it! I see.
    Himura: Sakashita-
Sakashita: Himura-san, I've figured out the trick!
Arisugawa: Hold it. Don't say it yet.
Komachi: You don't know if it's right.
[cut to Himura looking annoyed in the background]
Sakashita: Then should I tell you?
    Arisugawa: Don't say it yet!!
Yasoda: Well, looks like you're having fun.
Sakashita: Komachi, you still haven't figured it out?
    Komachi: Shut up. I'm thinking.
  • Arisugawa visualising the three different "Study in Vermilion" cases via pillows, eventually juggling them and causing a mess when he gets confused on how they connect to each other.
  • Himura's not-so-confident catchphrase as he second guesses his conclusion.
Himura: This crime is not beautiful... I think.
    [Record Needle Scratch]
Himura: Wait a second, could that even happen?
  • In "Apollo's Knife", Yasoda starts crying at the crime scene because, thanks to becoming a father, he's grown sensitive to the death of teenagers. Himura pulls him into an awkward hug while Arisugawa is surprised that he has a child.
Arisugawa: This is a weird place to say this, but congratulations!
    Yasoda: [sobbing] Thank you.
  • On the way to a witness's home, Arisugawa and Sakashita are spooked by the witness's dog barking at them. As Himura and Sakashita continue on, Arisugawa pauses for a second to bark back at the dog.
  • Himura's curtness cuts in to an otherwise heartfelt scene:
Himura: Then what's our relationship? Detective and assistant?
Arisugawa: Well... it's not just that.
    Himura: Then what?
Arisugawa: You're... [lapses into silence] ...What do you think of us?
    Himura: Acquaintances.
    Arisugawa: You're awful.
  • Himura and Arisugawa's first meeting. During a university class, Arisugawa is rapidly writing pages for his novel. He doesn't notice that Himura is sitting next to him and eagerly stealing the pages to read. When he runs out, he scoots right up to Arisugawa and tries to read over his shoulder, much to Arisugawa's confusion.
  • In "Detective, Blue Era", Himura is able to figure out that his classmates are collectively lying to him. While he makes his way through his chronologically first deduction, Arisugawa can be seen in the background getting increasingly excited and freaking out at his intellect.
  • After returning from his stint of Faking the Dead, Himura explains to the cast how he was able to survive his confrontation with Moroboshi: a giant bird swooped in, grabbed him, and flew him away. This is accompanied by sketches of increasingly degrading quality showing this supposed event.
Himura: To be able to safely return... I'm grateful to you all and the giant bird.
  • To welcome back Himura, a drunk Yasoda gets on stage and performs an idol song for him, dance included. While most of the gathered cast are appropriately embarrassed, Tokie gleefully claps along while Nabeshima gets up on stage and cheers him on.
  • Himura and co. interrogate three idols after another member of their group is murdered. However, seemingly on one of his odd tangents, Himura asks them about their personal lives and motivations instead of anything to do with the case. Afterwards, Arisugawa and Sakashita confess that they've gotten interested in idol culture, leading Komachi to shut them down and grill them about getting distracted.
  • Himura forcing Arisugawa to awkwardly explain to a roomful of police that the ABC Killer was likely inspired by the Christie novel, only to take the mic back and dismiss the connection as a possible coincidence.
Arisugawa: Are you seriously doing this?
  • Akemi's friends have a comical freak out when they learn about the serial killer targeting people in locations that are both based on the alphabet:
Chihiro: Will I be okay? My first name Chihiro starts with a- I should avoid Chayamachi!
Akemi: It's been last names so far, so you're fine.
Mana: Oh no! My last name is Domoto, so I should avoid "D" locations! ...Wait, what locations start with a "D"?
    Chihiro: ...Denmark?
  • One of the bloopers is from the scene where Moroboshi sets up a Deadly Game for Himura. What should be a tense moment as she wraps a blindfold around his head is made hilarious by her actress not realising that she's only wrapping it around one eye.
