"Teenage Dirtbag" has the lines "her boyfriend's a dick, he brings a gun to school". On the surface it seems like just another reason the narrator thinks his crush will remain unrequited- not only are he and Noelle in different social classes, she's also attached to a guy who'd be liable to "kick his ass" or worse if he made his feelings known. The other reason the detail is important is that most of the narrator's teachers and classmates would probably think he'd be the type to take a gun to school. Brendan Brown has said the song was based on life experiences being an outsider and suspected of being potentially violent due to being a teenage heavy metal fan; having a more popular student carry a gun shows that it's not always the "teenage dirtbags" you need to look out for.
