  • The anachronistic inclusion of Musketeer of black African descent Prince Aniaba "Hannibal" of Assinie in Part II is extremly apropos from a meta perspective, because the anachronistic inclusion of a real historical figure in a work of Historical Fiction purely for the Rule of Cool is not only something that Alexandre Dumas himself would have done, it’s exactly the way in which the literary D'Artagnan himself came into existence, with his Real Life counterpart, Charles de Batz de Castelmore d'Artagnan, having served King Louis XIV and not Louis XIII as a Musketeer. And the same can be said as well of Armand d'Athos, Isaac de Porthau, and Henri d'Aramitz, the inspirations for Athos, Porthos and Aramis respectively, all of whom were still children at the time the events of the original novel took place.
