  • Fridge Brilliance: When we see David Leigh, he sometimes holds his camera in his right hand and his mic in his left, and sometimes holds them vice-versa hinting that he's ambidextrous, and thus the killer.
  • Fridge Logic: Shelly indignantly claims that the murders were not investigated properly, but the only evidence for Suerd not being the killer is the tape she is analyzing, a tape that was not available to police at the time of the investigation.
  • Pay attention to the backseat of Leigh's car during his "reenactment trip". You'll notice some plastic...
  • Why would anybody give the tape to a little-known independent film-maker instead of the police, the TV chain or at least a large film studio? Because the filmmaker was in possession of the tape all along.
  • The ending shows that David acted pretty confidently when wrapping Shelly in plastic and putting her body in the van. He may have used the same method to remove Stephen Avkast's body from the Pine Barrens murder scene, which was never found.
  • It is indeed strange that the narrator still speaks of the "mangled animal" even after Shelly has repeatedly promised to reconstruct the face of the human killer. Of course, the "reenactment" trip in fact takes place after Shelly's murder, and presumably David is going to edit the fact that the killer had actually been captured on tape out of the final documentary. "It is a mystery and it may permanently remain so" indeed.
  • Jim Suerd may know more about Pine Barrens case than he told the police. Or at least that's what David might think. That explains why the documentary was only going to be made once Jim died.
