  • As Saberspark pointed out, Mark Twain being split between two separate individuals representing Idealism and cynicism is likely meant to represent how the man's own mental state tended to flip flop between the two extremes of the Sliding Scale of Idealism vs. Cynicism. However, it may have more significance: The man's Nom De Plume comes from riverboating lingo referring to the depth of the river in fathoms. A river marked with two (twain) fathoms is at the point where safe waters become dangerous, and where dangerous waters become safe.
