Fridge / Life Is Strange: Before the Storm

Go To

Fridge Brilliance

  • In Life is Strange, Chloe is on very bad terms with Frank but mildly defends him to Max, insisting that he's "not creepy" despite him just having waved a knife in her face. The fact that he comes to her rescue three times in Before the Storm, gets stabbed for his trouble, and is implied to have killed someone to defend her is likely why she's inclined to be so charitable towards him in the future.
  • Chloe can attempt to mend fences with several people, which the original game proves is a fruitless endeavour but is foreshadowed here:
    • Even in Before the Storm, Principal Wells is shown to not be interested in helping Chloe and even wants to revoke her scholarship since Blackwell Academy is seriously hurting for money. There was nothing Chloe could say that would placate him, which Joyce may pick up on during their conversation in Episode 2.
    • Likewise, Chloe's relationship with David will completely deteriorate by the original game, even if she is conciliatory towards him here. Why? Because Rachel's disappearance sent both of them into a spiral of bad behavior, with David being paranoid about bad influences and Chloe having all of her emotional wounds torn open.
    • A major choice in the first episode is whether to help Nathan Prescott of all people when he gets bullied. There are similarly a few choices later on to help Nathan by encouraging Samantha to reach out to him. So why is Nathan so hostile towards Chloe three years later? Well, remember his reaction to Chloe sticking up for him; he gets pissed and harshly turns down her good deed. Eventually, Nathan's mental health deteriorates even further and he falls into some bad influences. He and Chloe are both also very shaken by Rachel's disappearance, especially since Nathan accidentally killed her. These factors undoubtedly destroyed what little chance the two had of possibly getting along.
    • Why does Chloe's relationship with Frank also worsen despite him having saved her from danger here? Because of Rachel, who is revealed to have been cheating on Chloe with Frank (and later Mr. Jefferson) during the last year of their relationship]]. Even if Chloe is in denial, Frank's obvious familiarity and intimacy with Rachel whenever she comes up would tick her off. There's also the matter of Frank killing Damon, his good friend (which Frank acknowledges even when Damon is Jumping Off the Slippery Slope) to protect Chloe, only for Chloe to continue to prove to be (in Frank's eyes) an Ungrateful Bastard by still not paying back what she owes him.
  • Where are Chloe's friends at Blackwell Academy like Steph, Mikey, and Samantha by the original game? As the montage shows, Chloe no longer being at Blackwell means she doesn't get to spend time with them for two years, so they naturally drift apart. Chloe makes intense singular relationships rather than several broad ones.
  • Eliot's behavior comes off as more understandable (albeit no less creepy) when you remember Chloe mentioning losing her virginity over the past summer but casually remarking on it not meaning anything. If Eliot was the other person involved, it might explain his obsession with Chloe, and why he seems to think they're boyfriend and girlfriend after a long friendship. He was hoping for a Relationship Upgrade and didn't get it.
  • No wonder Chloe has no problem stealing an envelope marked "Handicapped Fund" from Principal Wells' desk in Episode 3 of Life is Strange. As far as she's concerned Wells kicked her out to save scholarship money, so she's not going to believe for a second that he isn't just running a scam.
  • Chloe witnesses Rachel start a fire, which soon fans into a huge forest fire thanks to wind. For the next couple of days, the news is full of reports of how bizarrely difficult the fire is proving to fight — almost like it's fighting back. No wonder she's later willing to listen to Max claiming to have supernatural powers and casually ask for proof instead of just staring at her.
  • How was Damon able to enter the Blackwell campus to retrieve his money from Drew? Chloe left the keys she stole from Samuel inside the door.
  • Chloe curses herself for freezing when Damon threatens Rachel with a knife. Later, in the original game, Chloe will very proactively shoot both Pompidou and Frank if they threaten Max.
  • In a bit of Fridge irony, Chloe finds a burned CD of songs that Max made for her and notes that Max probably didn't illegally download a single one of them. For all her love of playing pirates, Max doesn't practice copyright piracy.
  • In Chloe's first dream, in her father's car, she recognizes the country song playing on the radio as her father's favorite and seems comforted by it. However, in dialogue and in her diary, she firmly states that she hates country music. Her affection for her father is what allows her to appreciate that one song (though a later dream also establishes that she still prefers to listen to her own music).

Fridge Horror

  • Chloe choosing to lie to Rachel about her father has the effect of keeping their relationship intact, but it's unlikely to last. Frank was there and knows about Rachel's mother being kidnapped and drugged, so if Chloe doesn't tell the truth, it's likely he will eventually.
