Fridge Brilliance

  • In ‘Code Bega’, Gayle ruins her luncheon by scream-asking ‘what’s an iPad’, amongst other things that show her technological ineptitude. Prior to this, she goes on a monologue relating to how a neighbor goes by Christopher instead of Chris. In this, she makes an analogy referring to Mapquest, a defunct 1990s map site, further showing how out of touch she is technologically.
    • Actually, MapQuest still exists, though it's extremely unpopular. The Wikipedia article even outright states that people began shifting to Google Maps and similar services around 2008. What else began skyrocketing in popularity around that time that Gayle doesn't understand? Social media, touch-based devices such as the iPhone and iPod Touch, and streaming services. Gayle demonstrates in earlier episodes that she's still dependent on DVDs, still imagines Kid Pix to be relevant enough to have lying around the house, and only lets Dave have a flip phone. Her technological understanding stagnated at a very specific point.
  • After Terry finds out that Gayle uses dog shampoo, Gayle becomes irrationally convinced she's told Bonnie and nearly enacts her contingency plan in such an event: to move to Tallahassee and change her name to "Peggy." The unseen Peggy Gausmann is a constant Butt-Monkey, so it makes sense that Gayle associates that name with humiliation.
  • The use of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" to underscore Gayle's Heroic BSoD reaction to Bonnie getting an iPad. The speaker of the song addresses a person with whom she wishes to magically "swap ... places." Cf. Gayle's rant:
"I don't give a shit WHY CAN'T I BE BONNIE?! Did I say that, I didn't mean that I'm so jealous of you, Bonnie!"
