Jon suspects that Frank hides his face and is such a good songwriter because he had a traumatic childhood, in contrast to Jon, who had a standard suburban childhood. When Jon hears the name of Frank's hometown, Bluff, he says it sounds "dark," which he thinks confirms his hypothesis. When Jon arrives in Bluff, however, he encounters the exact same things that he saw in his own hometown at the beginning of the film, including a child zipping by him on a bike and a man washing his car and waving at him. This shows that he and Frank were actually raised under the exact same conditions.
