Amy growing up in New Zealand is a shrewd addition to the story. New Zealand's native wildlife is dominated by birds, a large fraction of which are endangered and in severe need of protection, and Canada geese also exist there as an introduced species. Amy would've been at least moderately familiar with these animals and felt empathy for birds in need of a safe wild home, even before moving to their native continent.
