Fridge Horror

  • If the sisters were to actually exist, they would have a terrible case of the "Kaspar-Hauser-Syndrome" or Hospitalism, meaning they'd be physically, psychologically and emotionally completely stunted and delayed in their development from their long time of isolation, lack of human contact or physical movement while locked inside the chicken coop. They would not have been able to sit or stand upright, walk, speak, go to the bathroom by themselves, recognize other humans, or function in any way, and be dependent on intensive care which they certainly wouldn't get at the Underwood, the travelling circus, or the Motel.
    • Imagine the endless chastisement the girls must have gone through at the orphanage because they weren't able to eat using cutlery, to read or write, or to keep up a conversation.
  • It's mentioned that their suitors only became more and more rough with times, and if Mrs. Bouldger just let the girls be slapped during a session without intervention, treatment of the children in the orphanage was likely the same.
  • At the Underwood the girls were likely conditioned to accept all physical attention, however inappropriate and abusive it may be, as positive attention. That, in combination with their total isolation and loneliness prior, leaves the twin sisters as the perfect victims for abuse and exploitation.
    • Their suitors were introduced to them as "uncles" and the sexual acts they were supposed to perform on them as "games", meaning their image of family and what family does to one another is completely messed up as well.
  • Just what happened to Sandy? Was she kidnapped and shipped off to some other place, just like the twins when they escaped? Did she run away? Most listeners assume she was murdered.
  • The fact that Sandy is described to be "all grown up" when she's only 12 years old shows how awfully distorted the girls' perception has become from the years of abuse inside the brothel.
    • The music video supports this: Melissa May, the girl who replaces Sandy as the most popular prostitute at the Underwood, looks to be around 4 or 5, only reaching up to an adult's knee. She seems scared, as well.
    • Since thirteen is already considered "too old" for the orphanage, we can assume the brothel caters towards downright pedophiles, meaning people sexually attracted to children (ages broadly 3-11), not pubescents. Prepubescent is already pushing it.
  • It's briefly mentioned that Mrs. Bouldger, the woman running the orphanage, lives there with her own three kids... Does that mean she prostitutes her own children as well?
  • The third verse of "A Campaign of Shock and Awe" compares the highly sensationalized and scandalized advertisement of the girls inside the circus to the way musicians and bands get hyped by record labels in our current times - except now that the Evelyns are touring musicians, they're object to that exact same treatment. They're still being handed around like a commodity to be gawked at and paid for, the only thing that's changed is the stage.
  • The girls get called "chicklets" by the pitchman because they've spent their entire infancy locked inside a sweltering hot chicken coop with next to no human contact whatsoever, so they likely adopted chicken-like behaviour.
    • When the woman says, "Just look at these photos!", she's most likely referring to child pornography made of the girls at the orphanage.
