There Goes the Neighborhood, released as Paydirt in most foreign countries, is a 1992 comedy film directed by Bill Phillips. The film tells a story of a dying prisoner who whispers the location of hidden loot to the facility's psychologist Willis Embry (Jeff Daniels), and, separately, three prison escapees, who all head to New Jersey to find it.

This film provides examples of:

  • Ax-Crazy: Marvin is a manic depressant who is off his pills, fires his gun wildly at one point when his name is called out in a panic and due to how unhinged he is, no one wants to cross him.
  • Big Bad: Norm hijacks the role in the third act while Marvin becomes a Big Bad Wannabe and Disc-One Final Boss instantly turned Dragon.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Marvin is this until Norm coaxes his way into running the show.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Marvin is running the trio of crooks through sheer sense of fear of crossing him and then his becoming submissive instantly to Norm's persuasion allows for him to take the role of Big Bad for the rest of the film while Marvin becomes his yes man.
  • Double-Meaning Title: Refers to the phrase in which a notable change comes about in circumstances (in this case, the mad dash for the money buried under the house) and also to the fact that all the people in the neighborhood are completely thrown into disorder and chaos (over the circumstances related to said money).
  • The Dragon: Marvin when Norm convinces him to let him takeover.
  • I Know Karate: Albert does a jujitsu move and declares this toward Willis when he thinks he's threatening him with a pick ax.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Norm insists on discreetly trying to deal with Willis and Jessie next door in order to keep them from getting the money first and when that doesn't quite work, he arranges a cease fire to be able to keep the other plan to get to the money from being discovered.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Norm being so intensely overworked perfect hides the fact that he's secretly hiding a lot of illegal contraband and been plotting other illicit activities on the side too.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Norm intends to invoke this and knock off the crooks once he and Peedi get the money.
