Pinocchio is a British and Italian adaptation of the novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi.

This adaptation explores more about Carlo Collodi as a writer, in addition to showing how he writes Pinocchio.

Tropes:

  • Ascended Extra: Mastro Cherry takes a more active role in the film, having a more detailed personality as a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
  • Demoted to Extra: Due to the series quickly jumping from the Melampo arc to the one of the Land of Toys, the Fairy never gets to be a full maternal figure for Pinocchio.
  • Executive Meddling: In-universe, Collodi's editor persuades him to resume the story after Pinocchio is apparently killed.
  • Gender Flip: The Talking Cricket is a female character isntead of being an old male.
  • Historical Beauty Upgrade: In real life, Carlo Collodi was Prematurely Bald and overweight, in addition to being in his sixties when he wrote The Adventures of Pinocchio. This version is portrayed by Tall, Dark, and Handsome and Mr. Fanservice actor Alessandro Gassmann, who is younger and has a full head of hair.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Mastro Cherry is initially jealous of Geppetto for having a child, but in the end decides to inform him about Pinocchio leaving and helps to localize him. Also, Lampwick, who is a very sympathetic character increasingly, as it is obvious his cynicism is from having an abusive father.
  • Lost in Imitation:
    • The adaptation is derivative of Luigi Comencini's version in a few elements, like Geppetto being a widower, the Fairy being his wife, Pinocchio taking a human likeness while he behaves well while taking a puppet appearance when he doesn't, or the animal characters having a human likeness.
    • The Cricket being assigned to guide Pinocchio was taken from the Disney version.
