Audra and Noel, a married couple, are living an ordinary, happy suburban domestic life. Both lawyers, they have been trying to get pregnant without success for the past year. They are both friends with their neighbors, another married couple named Pete and Marnie. A wrinkle occurs in the two's life together when Holly, Audra's college roommate, comes to visit. It turns out that Audra had been in a relationship with Holly, and Noel is instantly attracted to her. At the suggestion of Pete, Noel asks Holly (who's bisexual), whether they could have a threesome.Tropes:
- Blithe Spirit: Chill, uninhibited, cheerfully promiscuous Holly visits Audra and Noel, shaking up their straitlaced suburban life. She is a black bisexual Englishwoman who's there in an all white area of the US and definitely stands out. A carefree marijuana edibles baker, she casually agrees to Noel's idea they have a threesome when he learns she once dated Audra. Despite the initial mixed feelings the two have, both seem much happier in the wake of her visit as her free-spiritedness has rubbed off on them at least somewhat.
- Coming-Out Story: Audra at first claims her relationship with Holly was just a college experiment. Later she admits she'd been in love with Holly though, but doesn't use labels for her sexual orientation.
- Do You Want to Copulate?: Instead of easing Audra into the idea, Holly just bluntly asks if she'd like to have a threesome with Noel. Audra leaves in shock at first, but agrees later.
- Ethical Slut: Holly is unashamedly promiscuous, but she also makes sure her partners are on board and entirely comfortable with whatever happens.
- Experimented in College: Audrey tells Noel she had a fling with Holly in college. Though she says it was an experiment for her, it turns out she'd fallen in love with Holly.
- Girl on Girl Is Hot: Noel is very interested when Audra tells him she once had a relationship with her roommate Holly in college, wanting to know details of what the two did (she demurs). Pete is too, and a passing man who just was going by. Audra is naturally uncomfortable at this. Later, he's very turned on when watching her kiss Holly and then hearing just how good Audra is at going down on women.
- I Am Very British: Holly, who's English, speaks with an upper class accent.
- Law of Inverse Fertility: Audra and Noel have been trying to get pregnant for a year without success. It turns out Audra got pregnant easily in high school though, but didn't want to tell Noel as she worried he would blame himself. He'd gotten his sperm tested however, with them being fine, so he concludes neither is infertile they just didn't manage to conceive yet.
- Lipstick Lesbian: Downplayed, but Holly is a demure, long-haired woman who always dresses in clothes which show off her good looks. She's bisexual however, having a threesome with Audra, her ex-girlfriend, and Audra's husband Noel. Audra herself is more average than anything, and doesn't use labels. Pete even explictly says Holly is a lipstick lesbian on seeing her photo.
- Masturbation Means Sexual Frustration: Pete tells Noel he's taken to masturbating as his wife Marnie always turns down his overtures for sex. He's masturbated on her when she's sleeping out of bitterness, which disgusts Noel. Later, she woke up and was outraged while he did this. She was so mad she'd hit Pete and demanded a divorce. They get into marriage counseling though and save their relationship.
- Minimalist Cast: There are only five cast members, three main and two supporting (who appear in a couple scenes).
- Ms. Fanservice: Holly is a gorgeous woman who's unabashed in her sexuality, casually stripping off to swim naked in the pool and wearing a shirt without any bra under it, which shows her nipples on first arriving. She also casually agrees to a threesome with Noel and Audra, easily turning both on by her sensualness.
- No Bisexuals: After she's admitted her feelings for Holly, Noel objects that Audra can't just go become a lesbian, in spite of them both having a clear attraction for men as well. The word "bisexual" never occurs in the film.
- Old Flame: Holly was Audra's college roommate and girlfriend, who contacts her many years later to visit. Audra's husband Noel is instantly attracted to her. Audra remains attracted to Holly, and they have a threesome together.
- Overly Narrow Superlative: Noel says Audra's expression looks like the reaction someone would have after they learned someone they've not seen for years suddenly died, assuming this was what happened with Holly at first. She's incredulous that such a specific look can exist.
- Quirky Curls: Holly's free-spirited nature is partly shown by her hair being in a loose afro when she comes to visit her more straitlaced white ex-girlfriend Audra.
- Really Gets Around: Holly is unashamedly promiscuous (Audra broke up with her because she cheated), having had sex with many men and women. After Noel proposes she have a threesome with him and Audra, Holly easily agrees.
- Sexless Marriage: Pete complains repeatedly to Noel about his wife Marnie no longer having sex with him since they had kids. By the end, they're in marriage counseling, having started to be sexual together as well again.
- Sexy Discretion Shot: The scene fades out when Audra, Noel and Holly take off their underwear, the latter both reaching toward his dick. Afterward they're shown in the bedroom together after clearly having had sex.
- Skinny Dipping: Holly strips and is briefly seen naked before jumping in the pool.
- Sleeps in the Nude: Marnie likes to sleep nude sometimes, Pete tells Noel.
- Slut-Shaming: Audra says Holly is a tramp negatively while complaining about her to Noel when they're talking early on.
- Teen Pregnancy: Audra tells Marnie she became pregnant at 17 by her boyfriend. Marnie assumes that she had an abortion, though Audra actually miscarried, sparing her any tough decisions (plus having to tell her parents).
- Threeway Sex: Noel proposes this between Audra, Holly and himself after Pete suggests the idea. They agree, having sex offscreen with him and each other. He gets jealous though after they start kissing when he's not involved. Holly's been in them already more than once and says they did great when it's over.
- Too Much Information: Noel says this when Holly relates that Audra was very good at eating her out when they dated, but he seems more turned on than actually uncomfortable.
- Twofer Token Minority: Holly is a black bisexual Englishwoman. The rest of the cast are white Americans, and mostly straight as well.
- Uptight Loves Wild: Everyone is pretty surprised that Audra had been involved with Holly in college, as she's quite sexually straitlaced at present with her husband Noel. Holly though is a free-spirited, very beautiful bisexual who Noel is immediately attracted to, with Audra shown as still having a strong attraction for her as well. It's easy to see how Holly would have had this dynamic with Audra in college as well.
- Vapor Wear: Holly wears a shirt with no bra underneath for a while which clearly shows her nipples.
