Hellhole (original title: Ostatnia wieczerza, meaning Last Supper) is a 2022 Polish Religious Horror film directed by Bartosz M. Kowalski.
Father Marek joins a remote church that serves as a sanatorium for women thought to be possessed by the Devil. In truth, he is part of the Militia
and was sent as an undercover agent to investigate reports of missing women. Almost from the moment Marek steps foot in the church, he is assailed by disturbing supernatural phenomena.
No relation to Hellhole (1985).
Tropes:
- Anti Anti Christ: Marek was born to be The Antichrist, but he's not aware of it until the priests tell him they think he's the chosen one, and he's not keen on taking up the role even then, struggling against the satanist priests at every turn.
- Distant Prologue: The movie opens in 1957 with a priest trying to kill a baby he claims is the spawn of evil. He hesitates and is killed by militiamen, who take the baby with them. The movie then cuts to 30 years later as Marek arrives at the church. A few minutes later, we are shown he's the baby of the prologue through the scar on his chest.
- Downer Ending: The satanist priests get away with murdering and cannibalizing many innocents for their ritual, murder Marek and succeed in bringing Hell to Earth. Though, it doesn't end well for the priests either, as Piotr dissolves into flies and the others are all frozen in upside-down crucified positions in mid-air the last we see of them.
- False Friend: Piotr acts like he's the one priest who wants to help Marek expose the church's crimes, but ends up being one of the satanists all along and betrays Marek to the rest of them.
- Flies Equals Evil: A fly comes out of Marek's fallen tooth and later he pukes flies. Piotr dissolves in a cloud of flies as demon Marek enters the church.
- Hell on Earth: In the end, Marek unwillingly turns into a demon and brings forth a new world order as Earth is turned into Hell.
- The Infiltration: Father Marek is really a militiaman who joins the church to investigate reports of missing women.
- Mark of the Beast: A scar on Marek's chest signals his nature as The Antichrist.
- The Secret of Long Pork Pies: The disgusting meat that Marek is served every meal turns out to come from the women murdered by the priests. This is because the priests are trying to fulfill a ritual in which Marek must eat the flesh of seven sinners in order to become a demon.
- Total Eclipse of the Plot: Marek was born during an eclipse, which is another sign that he's The Antichrist.
- Vorpal Pillow: Piotr helps the prior to bed when the latter is very drunk and takes advantage of his vulnerability to suffocate him with a pillow.
