Tropes for the film:
- Hard Head: Jimmy Horn claims that a punch to the top of the head will do more damage to the fist than the head in a bare-knuckle brawl. In his fight with Tommy, he tilts his head forward before several punches so Tommy injures his hands on his skull.
- I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: Vonte Sweet and Gooding previously worked together on Boyz n the Hood.
- One-Word Title: Gladiator.
- Opponent Instruction: The plot has the Big Bad, a corrupt trainer, give some helpful hints to a fighter. "Make them think you're strong when you're weak". "Make them think you're weak when you're strong". These are all given an Ironic Echo when the fighter he gave this advice to uses it to thrash him in the ring.
- Tagline: "Nobody owns Tommy Riley. Nobody".
