Pikipek Line

Morphs [Oak Catalog #]

  • Pikipek (Dryocopus picus) [731]
  • Trumbeak (Campephilus canetis) [732]
  • Toucannon (Ramphastos intorqueo) [733]

Physical Description

The members of the Pikipek line are all avian Pokémon, each one possessing similarly-colored plumage, with their red, white, and black color scheme being the constant. Another constant they share is their zygodactyl feet, allowing them to latch onto trees with a tighter grip.

Pikipek is the smallest of the three, standing only 1 foot tall and weighing in at 2.6 lbs. Its gray beak is long with a pointed, black tip, and it has large blue eyes. There is a white, mask-like marking on its face that extends down its neck before ending in a tuft of feathers on its chest. A large crest sweeps upward from the back of its head with a red arrow-shaped stripe along the top that ends at its beak. The undersides of its wings are white. It has a flat tail.

Trumbeak is noticeably larger than Pikipek, standing at 2 feet tall and weighing 32.6 lbs. It has a long beak that tapers to a sharp point, with the majority being orange, changing to light red and then black at the tip. It has round blue eyes and pale gray eyebrows. Pointed feathers extend from the back of its head and form a short crest. A white marking covers its face and extends down over its chest; the undersides of its wings are also white. Around its neck is a jagged, red band, and it has three long tail feathers.

Toucannon is the largest of the three, standing at 3 feet tall and weighing 57.3 lbs with a beak almost as long as it is tall. The upper part of the beak has a black tip with three red bands gradually lightening in color toward the yellow base, while the lower part is smaller and is colored a solid red. The beak is known to change color to a complete solid red when heated. Around the base of the beak is a thin black band with two extensions into the upper jaw similar to nostrils. There are white feathers covering its chin and chest, and yellow feathers forming a half-circle on each cheek. Toucannon has dark blue eyes, light blue eyelids, and jagged, gray eyebrows.

Notable Biology

All members of the line possess highly-developed vocal cords, allowing them to let loose calls that can potentially cause permanent hearing loss if done close-range. All members possess other traits as well, such as a second stomach used to store seeds, rocks, and the gases needed to fire them off with the speed of a bullet, along with minor flame and venom sacs that allow them to pull off a small pool of Fire and Poison-Type attacks. Because of the lack of other similarities between the members of the Pikipek line, early Pokémon researchers believed that they were all different species.

Pikipeks possess strong beaks and highly-developed neck muscles for boring into trees in search of grubs or into rocks for making little hidey-holes, as well as powerful leg and foot muscles for a tight grip. A healthy Pikipek can peck as fast as 16 times per second. The unique "squiggly line" structure of the proteins in the beak help this Pokémon bore into nearly anything it wants to with little to no consequence.

Trumbeaks possess a somewhat different beak structure, with the very tip being leatherier and more flexible and containing muscle fibers, allowing them to purse their beaks as if they were lips. It uses this ability for spitting out seeds or creating over one hundred different calls. A properly trained Trumbeak can hit a bull's eye half a mile away up to three times over. As a trade-off, their beaks are also somewhat softer, making Trumbeak incapable of drilling into trees and rocks as it did before. Its neck muscles have also altered somewhat to be more oriented for strength and not speed.

Toucannon's beak is something else entirely, as it holds within a special chamber for gases and a flame sac to ignite them, allowing it to shoot flames as hot as 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Its tail also serves as a third leg, preventing Toucannon from falling over due to the kickback of its powerful beak blasts. It also uses its beak as a means of communication with others of its kind.

There exist three subdivisions of this line. The first subdivision demonstrates enhanced eyesight, as well as a second eyelid used to keep out dirt and sand, allowing them to maintain infallible vision no matter what. The second subdivision appears to have more battle-oriented instincts, allowing them to maximize the potential of moves like Bullet Seed or Fury Attack. The last subdivision is a bit rarer than the rest. This subdivision has more honed reflexes and a more developed hoarding instinct, allowing them to pick up an item they happen to be holding immediately after they drop it should such an event happen. They also have a tendency to find items, making them a commodity amongst Trainers. However, upon reaching the Toucannon stage, they lose such instincts and reflexes (likely due to their oversized beaks) and instead possess a more toned muscle structure, making them more powerful than other variants at the cost of not being able to benefit from any added effects their moves may bring.

Habitat

Members of this line prefer coastal or jungle environments, though some members have been spotted in areas that are more open and more inland, such as Poni Grove and Straight Street. Members have also been spotted in human settlements on Melemele Island, stealing whatever they can from food to shiny things.

Diet

The entire line is omnivorous, though some will be either primarily insectivorous or fructivorous depending on their stage and their habitat.

Pikipeks are primarily insectivorous, feeding on whatever grubs they find when burrowing into trees. However, they also display some fructivorous habits as well, feeding on berries they find in trees or in food stores of humans or other Pokémon. Because of this, it is regarded as a pest among agricultural circles.

Trumbeaks walk the line between insectivore and fructivore due to their softer beaks. Since they can no longer bore through trees for grubs anymore, they instead feed off of whatever they can find from the treetops or whatever they shoot down.

Toucannons are primarily fructivorous, though they are known to eat a few Bug-Types and the occasional Bounsweet. Their diet consists mainly of fruit so that it may use the sugars to fuel its flame sac and ferment any enzymes for the venom sac.

Hazards

As stated before, a Pikipek's beak is strong enough to bore through solid rock, thus it is strongly advised that a Trainer wishing to own a wild Pikipek dull its beak first so as to avoid killing your opponent's Pokémon on accident (or at the very least, focus on attacks that don't involve its beak).

Trumbeak may not be as powerful as its pre-evolution in terms of close-range power, but it can still prove dangerous if not handled properly. Numerous hospital reports have been made regarding Trainers with bullet-like wounds all over their bodies only to find seeds or rocks in the wounds instead of bullets, courtesy of a Trumbeak.

Toucannon is arguably the most dangerous of the three. While it may have lost the ability to peck or shoot as effectively as its previous stages, the real danger lies within the fire it shoots out of its beak. Trainers who recklessly use their newly-evolved Toucannon have been known to incinerate not only the unlucky Pokémon serving as their target, but the opposing Trainer as well. Not only that, but it goes without saying that getting hit with a blunt object heated to 212 degrees Fahrenheit hurts. A lot. Especially in one of the more… sensitive areas of the body.

All members of the Pikipek line are extremely temperamental, so always be advised not to do anything that may annoy, upset, or even aggravate it. There even exist reports of Pikipeks that suffered Trainer abuse having pecked holes into their Trainers’ skulls as revenge. Trainers are also advised to establish a connection the moment they capture it and that they do so while it is still a Pikipek, as it is easier to do so while it is still young than with a matured Trumbeak or Toucannon.

If you have any small Pokémon in your party (especially if they’re Bug or Grass-Types), make sure to familiarize your Pikipek-line member with them so as not to confuse them with prey. This is especially important if you have a Toucannon and it confuses your Voltorb for a mangosteen or your Gulpin for a guava.

On a less life-threatening note, it is important to teach your Pikipek-line member proper courtesy when introducing them to their new home, as their calls have resulted in numerous evictions regarding noise pollution and have cost many numerous hours of precious sleep. Earlier stages are also notorious for stealing shiny objects and hoarding them for themselves, so it is advised that Trainers keep a close eye on their belongings lest they wish to risk damaging their hands trying to get them back. They are also infamous for causing near-irreparable damage to homes due to their constant pecking, so it is advised that a Pikipek-line member be made an outdoors pet, especially if you live in an area where there are plenty of trees for it to peck.

Courting and Childrearing

Members of the Pikipek line reach sexual maturity once they near the Trumbeak stage. Once they find a mate, they use a series of mating calls that can be heard throughout the environment. Any Toucannons looking for a mate will incorporate the sounds of their beaks being smacked against trees or rocks. Once a mate has been found, the two are dedicated to each other for life. Afterwards, they seek to form a love nest of sorts and will not settle down until everything is perfect. While the male does not always do the nesting themselves, there do exist rare cases when they do.

Members of this line do prefer to mate with others of its own kind, but some have also been known to mate with other avian Pokémon, such as Chatot or Fletchinder. In rare cases, they will also mate with members of the Noibat line. Reports from the Paniola Ranch claim that there have also been successful attempts with Sigilyph, though these reports have yet to be confirmed or denied.

During the egg state of their life cycle, mother Toucannons keep the eggs warm by using its beak as a thermal regulator, as they would crush the eggs if they were to sit on them as other avian Pokémon do. Toucannon and Trumbeak also possess the capacity to adopt orphaned Pokémon eggs, as one Trainer claims that his Rowlet was raised by a Pikipek family cared for by a Toucannon and a Trumbeak since it was an egg.

Social Structure

From the moment they learn to fly, Pikipeks are taught to fend for themselves by their parents, some even giving the lessons first-hand. Afterwards, the Pikipeks fly off to start lives of their own, often not too far from their original homes. This can lead to large flocks occupying a single area, forming a family-based society in that area, consisting of a number of each member directly proportional to another, with Pikipeks and Trumbeaks being the most numerous and Toucannons being the least.

When dealing with invaders or predators, they will use guerrilla warfare tactics, striking from afar and attacking the moment they see an opening. It’s not uncommon to see Trumbeaks serving as the snipers, Pikipeks as the blitzers, and Toucannons as the main attack force.

In Human Culture

Because of Pikipek's admiration of shiny objects, the people of Alola have a saying for whenever something goes missing: "Something lost, something missed? Find Pikipek and its nest."

Because of the harmony between a Toucannon and its mate, Toucannons are offered to newly wedded couples as symbols of happy marriage in Alola. Conversely, because of its perpetual scowl, it has also become a meme of a bird flying on nothing but the power of anger.

The members of this line have also been known to make their way into popular culture as well. One famous case involves Toucannon Sam, the mascot of the popular fruit cereal Froot Hoops. Another involves Truman Trumbeak, a famous cartoon character from Unova in the 1940s to 50s known for his unique laugh and “screwball” attitude. Some have even equated Pikipek with a certain anthropomorphic alien gem from an iconic children's show due to the similar shapes of their heads.
