Tricanon is a Pokémon fanfiction by TheWanderingMist. It is hosted on Fanfiction.net here. It currently sits at just over 28,000 words with the latest chapter published on September 6, 2015.

The story is centered around three girls: Milli, Marie, and Mia. They are of the next generation of Pokémon Trainers. Each one sets off on their respective journeys but soon they all encounter each other through mysterious doors.

Each chapter so far has been subdivided into six parts broken apart by asterisks and each character has gotten two viewpoints per chapter.

Tricanon provides examples of:

  • All There in the Manual: There are extensive author’s notes apparently, as the author only put in the link to them at the bottom of Chapter 5. There’s some background info, including names and exactly who the Shout Outs are to.
  • Flash Forward Fic: Set sometime after the timeline of the Pokémon anime.
  • Mons: It is to be expected in a Pokemon fanfic. So far the showcased Mons include: Three Pichu, a swarm of Zubat, a Drifloon, and a Gardevoir. Ursaring is mentioned in passing.
  • Patchwork Fic: The author’s notes mention that though the fic borrows most heavily from the anime, a little bit of The Electric Tale of Pikachu is thrown in as well.
  • Shout-Out: In the author’s notes, they explain that a lot of non-canon extras are references to other series. E.g., the girl and her grandfather are a double Shout-Out to Space☆Dandy and The Order of the Stick.
  • Starfish Language: The author's notes state that Marie's speech is supposed to be rendered this way.
  • Switching P.O.V.: The P.O.V. rotates between the three main characters. The switch is denoted by asterisks separated by a letter.
  • Theme Naming: The Nurse Joy in Jubilife shares a theme with her brother as they are both named after character’s in Shakespeare’s ‘’Hamlet’’.
    • We have yet to see if the Jennys share a theme of being named after gemstones, ala Steven Universe.
  • TV Tropes Will Ruin Your Life: In-Universe. The author states that you can blame them for telling you about TV Tropes in the Chapter 5 author’s notes.
