Tales from Hell: Hazbin Hotel is a series of Hazbin Hotel fanfics written by DK_Eldritch on Archive of Our Own. The stories are also slowly being cross-posted to FanFiction.Net.

As the author has stated, the fics are meant to function more or less as fan-made episodes for the show following the pilot. Current stories include:

  1. The Lives We Try to Change (Fanfiction.Net link.)

  2. The Lance of Longinus (Fanfiction.Net link.)

  3. The Bassmaster (Fanfiction.Net link.)

  4. A Little Ball of Sunshine (Fanfiction.Net link.)

  5. Cannibal Cavalcade, or: Alastor Throws a House Party

  6. House Inspection

Tales from Hell: Hazbin Hotel provides examples of:

  • Absentminded Professor: Baxter is the main scientist in charge of Voxtech's science division and his thought processes are pretty out there. His first instinct with the Exterminator Spear was to douse it with atomic radiation, which would have potentially ruined it when they're trying to reverse engineer it.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Charlie may be the nicest person in Hell and she may have a high level of patience, but when she finally gives into her anger, it's downright terrifying. Marie learns this the hard way when she pushed the princess too far.
    • She also has no problem kicking people out of her hotel in aggressive ways if they make it clear that they aren't looking to be redeemed and are just using the place for less noble reasons. During the fifth story, she blasted several "patients" out of the building from the top floor when they tried to rob her and Vaggie.
    • By the 5th chapter of "House Inspection", she's had enough of Alastor's games and turns into her full-demon form to pummel him into a wall!
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Marie enters the Hazbin Hotel looking for a place to hide and states that she'd like to change herself from her violent ways. It's later revealed that she never desired to change and just wanted to turn the hotel into new territory for her gang.
  • Broken Pedestal: Downplayed in that Charlie always knew Alastor was no good, but she still gives him the benefit of the doubt. He starts to lose this as she learns about his schemes, with Charlie being rather caustic towards him in "House Inspection".
  • Cerebus Retcon: Vaggie's "I'm gonna kill him" line towards Angel is actually made more serious when she reveals that her spear is actually an angelic weapon, meaning that she can kill him at her leisure.
  • Character Development: It's slow, but Angel is starting to become nicer towards others and the idea of redeeming himself. Even some of his co-workers are noting that he's becoming soft.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Charlie wins her duel with Alastor by taking advantage of his fear of dogs, using an angered Fury as a distraction while she launches a fireball that knocks the Overlord off the platform.
  • Covert Pervert: Charlie is this, as she started thinking scandalous thoughts about her and Vaggie's intimate moments at her family palace and excitedly asks Rosie about her sex life with Alastor when she thought they were a couple.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • "The Lance of Longinus" centers primarily around Vaggie and her trying to get her spear back.
    • While "The Bassmaster" has a B plot focusing on Alastor, Charlie, and Vaggie going to the theater, the primary story revolves around Angel Dust.
    • "A Little Ball of Sunshine" features Niffty as the main protagonist trying to make friends, with Husk as the deuteragonist.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Rosie actually attempts to kill Charlie just because the princess respectfully disagreed with her opinion on relationships between Overlords.
  • The Dreaded: Rosie is this by virtue of being an Overlord, and is among the few of her kind in the same league as Alastor.
  • Eldritch Abomination: It's implied that Charlie's true form is this. She tears away her skin and everything fades to black, but what she truly looks like rendered Marie scared senseless.
  • Eye Scream: Turns out, Vaggie used to have two eyes when she first entered Hell. She lost her left eye when an Angel struck her during the yearly purge.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Vox is this for the entire series. The actions of his subordinates tend to draw the Hazbin patrons into the fold and he has an agenda that will involve all of Hell.
  • Heel Realization: After seeing an image of Charlie get torn up during the mob party he set up at the hotel, Angel has a My God, What Have I Done? moment and immediately tries to end the party.
  • He's Not My Boyfriend: Rosie makes it clear to Charlie and Vaggie that, despite their close relationship, she and Alastor aren't a couple.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Morticia is pretty much the only reason Baxter has had any success. She gives more rational suggestions and tends to do most of the heavy-lifting.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: In the fifth story, the Hazbin trio visit Alastor's home in Buckshot Ridge for a party he's hosting. It's located in the Cannibal Colony, so much of this is present.
  • Loveable Sex Maniac:
    • Angel Dust is actively flirty and loves having sex, but he does have a heart and is learning to care for Charlie.
    • Niffty is an upbeat Genki Girl and is more than a little boy-crazy.
  • Morality Pet: Charlie is slowly becoming this for Angel Dust, as the sight of a picture of her getting ruined at a party he started at the hotel is enough for him to cut off the festivities entirely. Also, Fat Nuggets is this for him on a more literal level.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: After Charlie wins her duel with Alastor, she ultimately fires him and renovates the Hotel, changing things permanently from the original status quo.
  • Oh, Crap!: Angel Dust has a minor freak-out when he sees that Vaggie's spear is actually an Exterminator Spear that can kill demons for good.
  • One-Woman Army: Vaggie fights over a couple dozen assassins and Voxtech workers to get her spear back, and she wins.
  • Secretly Selfish: Alastor implies that Charlie's desires for the hotel stem less from genuinely wanting to redeem her people and more to prove herself to her family. Charlie not being able to give a clear answer adds to this.
  • Shout-Out: Vox's "You control the vertical, I control the horizontal" line is one to the opening lines of The Outer Limits (1963).
  • Stepford Smiler: Beneath her happy exterior, Niffty is painfully lonely and desperately desires friends, and is aware that her Genki Girl nature doesn't endear her to most of Hell.
  • Succubi and Incubi: The Bassmaster can use his music to turn any surrounding demons into this. He does this when Angel tries to end his party early. Even Charlie is affected.
  • The 'Verse: Like canon, Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss share the same world. While the only character from Helluva Boss to appear in the series so far is Stolas, Blitzo and IMP are alluded to on occasion through things like Niffty watching the IMP commercial or Stolas offering to send Blitzo in to kill some people on Earth for Alastor.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Vaggie to Charlie. When she saw Marie riddle her with bullets, she went into a violent rage and started hacking away at her with her spear.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: Any injuries sustained by an angelic weapon (such as an Exterminator Spear) are permanent and will never heal. Get dismembered by one, and it's perma-death. This is why Vaggie's eye never regenerated.
