So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, A-D'oh is a fanfic in which the author imagines what the series finale of The Simpsons might look like.

This story provides examples of:

  • Back for the Finale: Hank Scorpio returns to take over the nuclear power plant.
  • Back from the Dead: Implied to be the case with Dr. Marvin Monroe.
  • Continuity Nod: There are lots of references to past episodes. These include Maggie shooting Mr. Burns, the deaths of Maude Flanders and Edna Krabappel, Fat Tony dying and being replaced by his cousin, steamed hams, Flaming Moe's, Selma's many husbands, etc. Even Bart's commercials for Butterfinger are referenced.
  • Grand Finale: As a hypothetical series finale, it features many plot points that tend to appear in final episodes. Characters retire, die, graduate, are promoted, become engaged, etc.
  • Internal Reveal: Bart casually mentions being El Barto and Martin says he should have seen it all along.
  • Killed Off for Real: Hans Moleman dies many times over the course of the series. Here, he dies of natural causes and his death is finally acknowledged by other characters. They even give him a funeral.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Bart and Lisa watch the last episode of Krusty's show and Lisa notes that the finale of a show that has run so long cannot possibly please everyone.
  • Put on a Bus: Apu has moved back to India, leaving the Kwik-E-Mart empty and abandoned.
  • Rank Up: When Chief Wiggum retires, Lou and Eddie are promoted to co-chiefs of police. He says they can work out how that works.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Lenny proposes to Carl, who accepts, albeit tepidly.
  • Suddenly Speaking: The fanfic ends with Maggie finally saying her first word: "D'oh!"
  • Surprisingly Happy Ending: The Simpsons' financial troubles are seemingly at an end as Homer gets promoted and Marge plans to open her own art gallery.
  • Take That!: At the town hall meeting, Comic Book Guy says he expects the Mayor's announcement to be the biggest letdown since The Phantom Menace.
  • Technology Marches On: In-universe: Otto plans to make a demo tape but Willie informs him that no one uses tapes anymore.
