Fanfic / 6 Times Ai Protected Her Groupmates and 1 Time They Protected Her

Go To

A fan fiction based on Zombie Land Saga by TheFoxyAssassin. The story follows Ai Mizuno of Franchouchou as she goes about her day performing with the group, spending each segment of the story helping one of her six group-mates with their own self-contained conflicts.

It take place in the same AU as another of the author's fics Days After where the girls are revealed as zombies to the public, hence the supporting cast not being surprised by the fact.

You can find the fic through either of these links:

  • Alternate Universe Fic: This takes place in the "Identities Revealed AU" where Franchouchou has revealed themselves as zombies to the public, making their zombiehood common knowledge among their fans and the general populace of Saga... Oh, and Ai and Junko are dating.
  • Condescending Compassion: A random woman out shopping spots Ai and Tae while they're working and begins to compliment Ai for letting "someone like Tae" help the group, not considering that she's downplaying Tae's role as a Franchouchou member due to the latter's zombiehood. As she doubles down on this kind of talk, Ai is quick to call her out.
  • Crocodile Tears: A more karmic version of this occurs; Lily encounters a teenaged boy who bullies her over being the sole trans girl amongst a group of idol singers. Ai appears and tells off the teen, in front of his mother at that, and Lily decides to shed some crocodile tears to make herself look even more hurt.
"Well," Ai continued with a convincing frown. "It's just that [your son has] been saying the most awful things to my friend here." She moved to Lily's side and put an arm around her as if comforting her.
Having picked up on the direction as soon as Ai started talking, Lily had already worked up a batch of crocodile tears and put on her best pout. She gripped her skirt tightly with one hand and rubbed her cheek roughly with the other, looking down as her shoulders shuddered. It was an incredibly sad sight to see a little girl cry and it was an even worse feeling to be told that your child caused it.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Ai is the focal character. She spends the day helping her groupmates with various self-contained conflicts they all find themselves in, offering support to them against some very difficult people (and Kotaro) that intrude on their space and feelings. This includes Kotaro yelling at Sakura, an overprotective mom unwittingly insulting Saki, an overeager fan trying to interact with Junko, some creeps hitting on Yugiri, a transphobe insulting Lily, and an ableist woman infantilizing Tae.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Junko's fan is very eager to get a photo with her to her discomfort. Yugiri assures Ai later that he's generally polite but got overexcited and lost track of his boundaries.
  • Jerkass:
    • Ai and Yugiri have an encounter with a pair of male hecklers who stubbornly make crass advances towards them, eventually insulting Yugiri for her implied past doing sex work. Ai eventually reaches her limit and forces the two creeps away from her and Yugiri, finally scaring them off by removing her head.
    • Lily meets a crude teenaged boy who bullies her over her being trans. Eventually Ai comes along and puts him in his place.
    • The elderly woman at the end who insults Ai and Junko for kissing.
  • Now, Let Me Carry You: The last scene has the rest of Franchouchou defend Ai when a homophobe harasses her and Junko for dating.
  • Off with His Head!: Ai removes her own head to scare off a pair of men harassing her and Yugiri.
  • Sleep Deprivation: Ai spends most of the story already exhausted from the day before and then after spending the whole day helping the whole group is utterly wiped.
  • Slut-Shaming: While trying to ward off the hecklers, Yugiri alludes to her past as an oiran doing sex work for clients, a fact that the two men immediately jump on to humiliate her.
  • Tranquil Fury: Ai is able to keep her composure up through many stressful situations. Her response to a man trying to grab Yugiri is to calmly and firmly sink her nails into his wrist.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Saki finds herself unable to argue when a fan's mother accuses her of being a bad role model given her past as the leader of a biker gang. When Ai asks the fan what Saki would think of her ditching school, the fan answers that Saki would likely tell her to stop slacking off and focus on what's important like family, working hard, and not letting anyone else decide what you can and can't be. Saki is pleasantly surprised by this answer.
