Night Dragons is a Game of Thrones fanfic where Maester Aemon sends Grenn to Meereen to ask for help for the Night's Watch from his great-grand niece Daenerys Targaryen.

Tropes that appear in this fanfic:

  • Adaptational Explanation: Lyanna Mormont mentions her mother Maege was killed at the Red Wedding; in the show it's established that Maege is dead by Season 6 when Lyanna first appears, but not when.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: Grenn isn't exactly bright in the books or show but he knows how to write here, enabling him to write a dictated message from Maester Aemon.
  • And Now You Must Marry Me: Euron forces Yara to marry him and rapes her.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • Grenn and Maester Aemon are mainly supporting characters in the books and show but become POV characters here.
    • Howland Reed is a primarily unseen character in the books and show outside of flashbacks in the latter, but makes a full appearance here.
    • Anguy, the resident archer for the Brotherhood without Banners, participates in the wight hunt, most notably attempting the experiment of shooting a white walker to see how much of a dent it makes in the army of the dead.
  • Birth-Death Juxtaposition: Two dragon eggs are hatched on Maester Aemon's funeral pyre.
  • Child by Rape: Yara's daughter by her uncle Euron; Yara is outright struggling to name her.
  • Death by Adaptation: Gendry mentions Tobho Mott was executed by Cersei for performing a job in the North.
  • Fingore: Yara loses one of her fingers to Euron.
  • Flashback: Maester Aemon has one in the prologue where he thinks back to his last meeting with his uncle Bloodraven when he left for Beyond the Wall.
  • Flaying Alive: It's mentioned that Ramsay flayed Osha after killing her. He then gave her skin to Rickon as a blanket.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Melisandre gives her life to resurrect Jon with his consciousness intact.
  • Hidden Backup Prince: The captain's daughter Theon bedded on the way to Pyke bore a son by him.
  • I'm Dying, Please Take My MacGuffin: More like a "I will not return, please take my MacGuffin" where Bloodraven gave two dragon eggs to Aemon before leaving.
  • Missing Mission Control: Daenerys is captured by Euron, forcing everyone in her court scrambling to find her.
  • One-Hit Polykill: Utag, the lone Giant archer, shoots six Boltons while Ramsay shoots at Rickon.
  • Pædo Hunt: Ramsay entertains taking the underage Lyanna Mormont as a second bride as a means of taunting Jon.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Sansa sends Harald Karstark to the Wall to take the Black.
  • Rule of Three: According to Howland Reed the First Men attempted to make Moat Cailin twice and failed; the third effort only succeeded due to the work of the Children of the Forest.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • Grenn survives a bit longer than the Battle of Castle Black thanks to being sent to Meereen.
    • Rickon gets shot by Ramsay but Jon is able to reach him and take him to safety.
    • Instead of being killed in the Battle of the Bastards, Harald Karstark is captured.
  • Team Switzerland: The Northern Mountain Clans choose to sit out Jon's conflict with Ramsay Bolton.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Harry Strickland carries the remains of Blackfyre, the valyrian steel sword used by Aegon the Conqueror; it was broken years ago when Miles Toyne fought Arthur Dayne, who cut the sword in two with his Thunderbolt Iron sword Dawn.
  • Your Princess Is in Another Castle!: Rickon, with Bran's help, discovers that another army of the dead is held in reserve, which brings the numbers to more than 200,000 wights.
