Manners and Misunderstandings is an A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones fanfic that places the characters in a Regency England setting.

Tropes that appear in this fanfic:

  • Adaptational Heroism: Cersei isn't involved in Robert's death this time around.
  • Blackmail: Joffrey pretends to have taken liberties with Sansa and attempts to extort Ned by demanding a larger dowry. It turns out that this is due to his gambling debts.
  • The Cameo: A red-bearded Free Folk (a radical political group) is heavily implied to be a representation of Tormund Giantsbane.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Instead of being killed in a Hunting "Accident", Robert Baratheon dies from complications of a stroke.
  • Famed In-Story: Jaime Lannister is well-known for his exploits in France and Spain and refusing to buy his rank, as was the custom during that time, preferring to earn his rank on merit.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Some of the examples described on the books' Fantasy Counterpart Culture page on this wiki are expounded on.
    • The wildlings are proto-Socialists who hail from the Scottish Highlands, and many are descended from those who fought under Bonnie Prince Charlie.
    • The Dornish being compared to Spain is taken up a notch with the Martells being a family from southern Spain (the author says they're from the vicinity of Granada or Seville).
    • In keeping with the Valyrians being counterparts with the Roman Empire, the Targaryens are now Italian nobility.
  • The Gambling Addict: Joffrey's foolishness take the form of his fondness for cards, or the tables as described in-story. His mounting debts form the motivation for his actions for the second half of the story.
  • Great Offscreen War: The Napoleonic Wars is the main background to the story. Stannis is a Captain in the Navy, Jaime Lannister is a well-known Lt.Col in the army, while Robb and later Rickon) are also in the army in junior officer positions, and Theon enlists in the Navy.
  • Historical AU: The characters are placed in the real-world historical setting of Regency England.
  • Honorary Uncle: Domeric Bolton is described as this for Mya and Mychel's son, who is also named Domeric.
  • A House Divided: Brandon Stark (Ned's elder brother) is explained to have sided with the Americans and left England (the real explanation was that he left under a cloud of scandal in an argument over the marriage triangle between Rhaegar, Lyanna, and the unnamed Elia). It's suggested that Robb and Rickon might find themselves facing him should their regiments be sent there.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: How Ned remembers Robert. Robert was lazy and womanizing as in canon, but would always stretch out his hand for those who were left out, happy to buy drinks for everyone, and stood by if a friend got in trouble. When Mya's mother came to him for help, Robert set her up nicely.
  • Killed Offscreen: Margaery tells Sansa that Joffrey died from laudanum poisoning; whether this is due to a jilted lover, angry creditor, or if Joffrey committed suicide is unknown.
  • Lost Will and Testament: Chapter 23 has Ned trying to find Robert's will because Robert hid it away. Unfortunately Robert suffered a stroke and can't remember where he hid it. Thankfully the will is found before the end of the chapter.
  • Missing Mom: Gendry's mother passed away when he was very young.
  • Nobility Marries Money: Robert's first marriage. He had the title, Gendry's maternal grandfather was a Self-Made Man.
  • Personal Seals: Robert has a signet ring made of pure gold, which he bequeaths to Ned upon his death.
  • Related Differently in the Adaptation: In this story, Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen are Robert and Cersei's legitimate children, while Gendry is their half-brother from Robert's earlier marriage. When Robert married Cersei, part of the agreement was that Gendry would be raised with his poorer relatives until they died and Robert took him under his wing.
  • The Reveal: Jon is really the son of Lyanna and Rhaegar.
  • The Runaway: Rickon sneaks out of his boarding school to join the army.
  • Settle for Sibling: Discussed; the Tyrells are encouraging Margaery to get herself courted by either Gendry or Joffrey since Joffrey is still a fine catch thanks to his Lannister mother despite being a second son.
  • Setting Update: The premise of the story, as the Great Lords of Westeros are adapted into a setting similar to that of Jane Austen's books.
  • Spiteful Will: Cersei sees Robert's will as this after she only really gets his share in the estates agreed on in their marriage arrangement and 100 pounds a year, bitterly noting that even in death he finds ways to insult her.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Gendry keeps a portrait of his mother in a locket as the only thing he has left of her.
  • Unexpected Successor: Trystane Martell; his elder brother was killed in action in Spain making him heir.
  • Who's Your Daddy?: A running plot thread is a question of who Jon Snow's father is; he is already established as being Lyanna's son, but there are a number of options from Lyanna's deceased husband Mr. Snow, Robert Baratheon, to the odd Italian nobleman who married Lyanna in secret in protest from his other wife's family.
